Is Jermaine O’Neal still a possibility?

Well, if we can’t get the “Big Ticket” himself, I’d be more happy to welcome O’Neal to the Purple & Gold. Hopefully, the Lakers organization know about this and start talking to the Pacers to bring O’Neal to Los Angeles.

Orlando Sentinel: [Darrell] Armstrong thinks the Pacers still are contemplating a trade of star center Jermaine O’Neal, which would touch off a complete rebuilding of the roster. He also is looking around the league, still thinking someone could use a veteran backup who still can change a game with his high-energy style.

And again I say ok..but not with Lamar Odom in the mix.

    For Bynum and fill ins..ok.

    For bynum LO…NO WAY.

    thank you drive through.

    Agree.

If we can get J.O. and keep Odom, we’ll be in shape. I’m just personally not a big fan of J.O. Especially if we have to trade Odom to get him.

    I think Odom Bynum > J.O.

I agree with LD2k, but only if (1) KG will not happen; (2) that we give up only Bynum and (3) that JO agree to an extension NOW and not opt out as he has threatened. Otherwise he’s no upgrade and not worth it.

I’d rather have J.O. than KG at this point. If KG is in LA everyday even getting annoyed when people approach him about playing with the Lakers forget him. Atleast we know that J.O. wants to be here. Garnett can stay in Minny and keep losing if thats what he choses to do. I can bet you that with a change in scenery those nagging injuries that J.O. has would magically heal up and he would ball for us. I love Garnett and all but if he don’t want to be here we don’t need him.

No one apparently seems to understand that having JO, Odom, and Bryant would mean a huge hit to the Lakers’ payroll… for only 3 players!

I don’t want JO for the pure fact that he’s so overpaid. I mean comeon his salary for the next 3 years is: 19.7 million, 21.3 million, 23 million. What is wrong with these idiot GM’s signing players to such enormous undeserved contracts. Frankly, it makes me sick. Now JO, Lamar, and Kobe would takeup about 53-55 million of the salary cap. In otherwords 100% of the cap! The remaining 9 players with the exception of the MLE will be garbage players like Sasha.

You have to pay to play.

    Nuff said.

  • fred0s

Well, if you can win a championship, I doubt that Jerry Buss would care how much he would have to pay. Plus, it being the Lakers, I bet he generates a lot (I mean a lot more than any other team/player) of money from Kobe Bryant. I mean $2000 for one courtside seat to see Kobe? He must easily make more money then say Cleveland or Miami (Lakers do always draw the biggest road crowds).

Righ, Right Right my little droogie…that’s enough…around the league …a lot of teams talk as if J.O. is damaged goods???..it would be a good thing for all because the Lakers could really welcome him in and i think it would rejuvinate his career…what do u think?

  • David

J.O.= way overpaid and injury prone. This said he plays in the much “softer” eastern conference. What’s gonna happen to him when he’s banging with Amare, Oden, and Stoudemaire. He’ll probably be in a wheel chair half the season.

  • punkjones

    David -
You’re crazy that JO is overpaid. He’s a six time all star with talent, plays D and averages 20 and 10 a game. LO is overpaid at 13=14 million with no consistency on either end, only consistent in rebounding. He’s a tweener who we’re counting on to play big and be our second option in scoring. It’s not working. It hasn’t for three years now. How long should the experiment continue?

There are only two guys in the league right now we are after, JO and KG who can give a semblance of a post up game, or at the very least, play like quality bigs which they both are. Bashing JO is silly considering what we’ve got right now with a project in Bynum, bad hands cake throwing Kwame and inconsistent Lamar. Talk about injury prone. 2 of the last three years Lamar has been seriously injured playing the power forward position. We need a change.

  • lakerfan81

punkjones. Actually O’neal is overpaid. Under the current CBA cap rules only true franchise players should be getting max contracts. Those players include Kobe, Duncan, Nash (who actually doesn’t get a max contract), Garnett, Nowitzki. You cold probably include Bosh, Howard, James, Wade and perhaps Mello in this group in the future. Those are about the only players that should be getting max contracts. Personally I think O’neal should be getting aroung 14-15M not 20M. I do agree that Odom is overpaid as well. He probably makes 3-4M too much.

Many GMs do not understand how to work with the current Cap rules. That is why many players get max contracts that they do not deserve (LEWIS). Also teams will start to realize that it is very difficult to win with two max players because it will be very difficult to bring in enough talent around those players, especially with the luxury tax. Some of this will work it self out in the future and there will be a lot fewer players getting paid that much.
Another reason for so many max contracts for players that do not deserve it are because GMs, who are usually former NBA players and do not have any background in negotiating, are talking to agents who get paid millions of dollars because they are great at negotiating. Its a bad situation for GMs.

  • punkjones

I don’t know, six years of all star status for a legit big averaging 20 and 10 with good D seems worth 18 mill per. Remember we had Brian Grant under contract for three years at 13-15 million per and he couldn’t even play. JO looks like a friggin’ bargain to me right now, personally.

Granted I don’t pay the bills for the Lakers but there is not a huge difference between LO’s contract and JO’s. There’s a difference, but it makes sense given that JO is a better player. You’ve got to pay something to win.

Like you’ve said before, if they could get JO to sign an extension for slightly less (say 3 years 40-45 million) under the understanding that they are building for a winner here, we would hope he would go for it. If you could do it before he comes, so he does not opt out, then the Lakers should really consider doing it instead of losing half the team for KG.

At this point I’m personally tired of the LO experiment and I would like to see a trade for him go down. He’s a good guy and talented but he’s a bust on the Lakers so far. All arguments against JO because he’s injury prone don’t hold water to me when we’ve seen a broken down Lamar for most of three seasons.
