Injury Update: Gasol, Bynum & Walton

Mike Trudell, the official Lakers reporter, fills us in on some injury updates…

Picture 3Lakers Basketblog: Lakers forward Pau Gasol and center Andrew Bynum will miss Thursday evening’s preseason game in Anaheim against Denver, though forward Luke Walton will dress and be a coaches’ decision to play.

Gasol, who strained his right hamstring earlier in training camp, will also miss Friday night’s game in San Diego and await re-evaluation early next week.

Bynum, who strained his rotator cuff and suffered a contusion of the left knee this week, will not play Thursday evening but will be re-evaluated on Friday morning. He’s listed as day-to-day.

Walton (back), meanwhile, practiced for the first time in over a week on Wednesday and will dress against the Nuggets, though his participation will be up to Phil Jackson.

Wow. I had no idea Bynum had a left knee contusion…

Gasol needs to be re-evaluated? His injury is starting to scare me. I get the feeling that this is going to linger for a while. He played through the ’08 NBA Finals, played the Olympics, then logged HEAVY minutes en route to another Finals in ’09, then played at Eurobasket. Now we expect the Lake Show to reach the finals again, AND he’s gonna play at the Worlds in ’10. Wow.

Bynum is scarin’ me man! He’s starting to look really injury prone. Hope he heals well and soon, without his it will be hard to smash on the powers of the east.

Calm down guys. It’s a long season and they want to be extra careful with the bigs. We have a very deep team and can lean on multiple players throughout the season. Did you all see Josh Powell last night? Point given!

Nahh, Josh Powell hasn’t proven that he can sustain that kind of effort. I’ll rest more comfortably when Pau isn’t reporting pain in a hamstring after a couple of weeks of rest. Pau and Kobe are the two more important pieces we have. Pau makes EVERYONE’s job so much easier. I seem to remember a lingering injury last season lasting a lot longer than expected (see Kevin Garnett).

FACT: This last preseason game was MEANINGLESS.

FACT: Precaution with Pau and Andrew is SMART: why aggravate injuries in a meaningless game?

FACT: Andrew has a BRUISE. He is 22. People age 22 can play with bruises if necessary.

      Chillax.
