Today marks the 51st birthday for Earvin “Magic” Johnson!
Magic, five-time NBA Champion and three-time MVP, first entered NBA in 1979 as a 19 year old kid, taken 1st overall from Michigan State by the Lakers and that was the day the NBA changed for the good (well good for the Lakers and the Laker fans, not so good for the other teams and their fans)
Magic (and the arrival of Captain Kareem) started the “Showtime” era, a Run ‘n Gun team where every play would finish as if it was a five on nothing fast break, with either a ridiculous pass from Magic or a ridiculous dunk. It was Magic’s court vision and uncanny ability to know where his teammates would be that made the “Showtime” Lakers a fun dynasty to remember.
It was easy for him to see the court and find open teammates when his eyes open up like his did but you’d love that moment cause thats when he sees a play coming and that signature smile of his would always put a smile on your face, cause it left the rest of the NBA frowning.
Magic will always be known as the best point-guard in the history of the NBA and no better franchise for him to have played for than the Lakers. Happy 51st birthday Magic!
