Garnett tried to get $60 Mil extension from Wolves before trade

Thanks to Ajay Virk for sending us this article. Again, if you guys see anything Lakers related that you think deserves to be put up, just e-mail us at GetGarnett@gmail.com.

TwinCities.com: Before the Timberwolves traded Kevin Garnett to Boston, the all-star forward sought a $60 million, three-year contract extension from the Wolves.

“If he wanted $12 million, $12 million and $12 million instead, I would have signed him,” Wolves owner Glen Taylor said Thursday.

Garnett already was signed with Minnesota for $22 million this season and $23 million next year. As part of his deal with the Celtics, he received the $60 million, three-year extension he sought, guaranteeing him, at age 31, $105 million over the next five years. Included was an $8 million up-front payment.

During a six-week period leading up to the Garnett trade, an eight-member Wolves committee met five times to discuss franchise strategy that included whether to trade Garnett. Members were Taylor, Kevin McHale, Rob Moor, Randy Wittman, Fred Hoiberg, Jim Stack, Rob Babcock and Zarko Durisic.

Moor, the team’s CEO, ran the meetings. Taylor represented just one vote.

I’m with Lakerfan81…I don’t dispute players that look to earn big bucks, they deserve it. But for someone that has always expressed his want to win instead of the bucks…I’m very disappointed.

Man I cant believe I actually wanted this guy to be a Laker. I thought this guy was about winning, I thought he actually had loyalty, but I was wrong. Its all about the money for this guy. Now im actually glad hes not a Laker.

• lakerfan81

This is one of two things. Either he is really greedy (he did sign a pretty big extension and obviously wanted a huge one from Minn) or he was trying to force his way out from minnesota by asking for an amount that he knew they would not grant him.

• vintage323

Serious guys I’m tired of reading about KG the guy is in Boston now I had alot of respect for the guy since he was a rookie but to hear this and choose Boston a franchise that hasn’t won since the Bird days over a franchise that does what it takes to win cause I do believe we tried but it was the big ticket himself that had the say( warm weather want to win thats a bunch of hoopla), I’m truely bitter towards the guy especially to have people like the staff of getgarnett to put up such a site solely for the purpose of getting the man himeself “The Big Ticket” more like the “Big Sellout” and for the true Laker fans for the countless hours of sleep searching for news updates it doesn’t get any better than that so I’m truely “OVER IT” so its time to change the site name and move forward KG is dead news so c’mon staff get the wheels rollin and give us Laker fans something to look forward to.

Phil (LA): As one of Kobe’s closest confidants (as a reporter), do you know if he’ll sit out camp if the Lakers don’t pull off a blckbuster or trade him? Are any trades still in discussion, and if so, who’s coming to LA? J Oneal?

Andrew (San Diego, CA): Gotta throw the Kobe question out there. Strangely quiet, its freaking me out. Also, Laker schedule posted on kb24.com. Ric, all that “never play in a Laker uniform again” stuff is looking a little, um, shaky. Care to explain?

Chris, LA: KG was an obvious move for Ainge and a good one, do you see the Kobe Lakers doing a GOOD move like AK, or any other not including Odom (BWallace)? Thanks

Ric Bucher: (3:06 PM ET ) I don’t see how the Kobe-will-never-play-in-a-Lakers-uniform-again premise is looking shaky. He’s simply decided to let the Lakers make his case for him, concentrate on Team USA and stay out of the news. I plan to write a column later today on why the Lakers’ inability to make a move and the bittersweet experience of playing with JKidd in Vegas leaves us exactly where we were last time Kobe spoke.

————————————————————————–

Chris, New York, NY: Ric, you’ve had experience with Yao and some of the Chinese basketball players. What do you think of Sun Yue, the Lakers draft pick. Can he play? Will he be able to contribute?

Ric Bucher: (3:15 PM ET ) I’ve seen Sun Yue as much as any U.S. writer, having watched him play for an ABL team called the Aoshen Olympians last season and with the Chinese National Team. (His nickname is Q-Tip, for what it’s worth.) He is long and athletic and has decent skills, but the next time he goes right will be the first time. Some people favor their strong hand, but he is ALL left. He’s intriguing, but I thought the same of Slava Medvedenko.
Short answer: No, he won’t be able to contribute.

————————————————————————–

sukhreet: bakersfeild,CA: Ric, do you think kobe will change his mind if lakers some how get jermaine oneal and sign webber?

Ric Bucher: (3:18 PM ET ) No.

————————————————————————–

Phil (LA): Ric, you didn’t answer my question… Any talk between the Lakers and other teams about a possible trade? What are the chances we land Oneal without giving up both Odom and Bynum? Will that ever happen?

Ric Bucher: (3:19 PM ET ) The Lakers are offering Kwame and Bynum. The Pacers want Odom and Bynum. I’m told that will never happen.

————————————————————————–

Jim: It seems like Chicago has the piece to go get a post player, so what are they waiting for?

Ric Bucher: (3:21 PM ET ) My guess is that Chicago is waiting to see how the Kobe saga unfolds. My sense is that’s where he ultimately would like to go, and despite a lot of innuendo otherwise, the Bulls would love to have him if they don’t have to give away their entire team to get him.

————————————————————————–
PK (Seoul, Korea): Had Lakers traded Bynum for JKidd at the Feb. deadline and kept Kobe from publicly bashing the Lakers management, could KG conceivably been willing to force his way into LA after realizing it was time to move on? I know that’s a huge if, but after how everything unfolded in Celtic’s acquistion of KG, as a Laker fan, I just have to wonder.

Ric Bucher: (3:55 PM ET ) If the Lakers had traded Bynum for JKidd, you wouldn’t have Kobe wanting out. In either case, KG wasn’t coming to LA. They simply don’t have anything Minnesota wanted.
And for someone else who asked about why I hate the Lakers, just stop it. (Ric getting emotional huh! you can tell LakerNation was coming at him hard today!) I can’t help that your team is in a bad way. When I was proclaiming that the Lakers were better than the Kings back when Sac mattered, then I was a Lakers’ homer. I don’t have personal interests in any team, in part because I grew up in Cincinnati without a team, in greater part because I’m just not wired like that as a journalist. But this is probably a topic for my next podcast with Simmons.

————————————————————————–
Steve( Alabama): What are the chances that Kobe stays a Laker? 1-10, 10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.

Ric Bucher: (3:59 PM ET ) I can only go by what he has said, which is he never intends to play for them again. So give me a 10.

• cyrus

Ric Bucher is a Phoenix Suns lover and he’s the Laker’s enemy number one. Ric Bucher is a liar, master of deception and he would sell his own mother to get higher ratings. Ric Bucher is a cheap sensationalist journalist. He put himself back on the map with lies about Kobe.

Ric Bucher is the one to blame for Kobe’s media frenzy; Kobe shared his frustration with Ric foolishly over the phone and Ric went public with it, and it all started from there.

Ric Bucher and Steve kerr (Suns new GM) are friends and fanatic fan of the Phoenix Suns, he would do anything to hurt Lakers. NEVER believe what this A-Hole says.

IF YOU ARE A TRUE LAKERS’ FAN, DO NOT TRUST RIC BUCHER, AND IF YOU ARE A TRUE LAKERS’ FAN DO NOT PROMOTE RIC BUCHER IN POSTING HIS VIEWS. RIC BUCHER IS LAKERS’ ENEMY NUMBER ONE. PERIOD

• cyrus

lakerfan81,

I always enjoy your posts and most of the time I agree with your views. I also read your great post about JO trade in previous thread. However, I was stunt to see you posting Ric Bucher’s Q/A. It’s so unlike you. you usually have very sober and logical comments, but this one on Ric Bucher truly stunt me.

• lakerfan81

No i don’t think Bucher hates the lakers. I think he is trying to generate hype for his articles. I think he spoke with Kobe in June when Kobe wanted to leave and he is still just basing his kobe wont be a laker talk off of that. I think Kobe spoke with Mitch. He was told that he would nto be traded, that the Lakers were trying to get Garntt (for half of the city of LA and the entire Clipper organization?), and that Indiana was asking too much for JO. Kobe realized that he was not going to be traded, sitting out tarnishes his image that he has tried so hard to rebuild since the Colorado incident, and that tradin LO and Bynum for Jo was a lateral move (or small improvement) and did nto make the lakers contenders. So he backed off from his trade demand.

• lakerfan81

It was just so surprising for me to see you giving any credibility, what so ever, to Ric Bucher.

money…

• nyla

• cyrus

lakerfan81,

Your post in previous thread is summing up the complexity of Jermaine O’Neal’s trade; it is sobering and very real. It would require high caliber Manager to close a favorable deal. Unfortunately, Mitch Kupchak is lacking the skills and the authority to get it done.

Jermiane O’Neal would make a difference but would not justify his $65-Mil salary over the next 3 season, and adding Troy Murphy’s $42-Mil contract would bring it to over $100-Mil on salaries, which could potentially paralyze Lakers for a few years to come. Even without Murphy’s contract, we would be paying over $40-Mil in annual salaries just for 2 players, Kobe and JO.

It sounds like wishful thinking; but one way to get this trade done would be for the Pacers to take Murphy off the table and agree to a trade without including Bynum. For 2 reasons; I suspect that Jimmy Buss still doesn’t want to let go of his “pet project”, and including Odom in the trade would solve the salary issue. We still have 2 players with $20-mil a pop, but better than what we have now.
Bucher: Artest To Knicks Deal In The Works
August 3, 2007 – 3:21 pm
ESPN –

ESPN’s Ric Bucher said that he’s “heard a rumor that a Artest deal was in the making” to send the talented two-way swingman back home to New York to play for the Knicks.

Bucher reports the following principal trade terms: a first-round pick, Nate Robinson and either David Lee or Renaldo Balkman.

The Knick may want to include Malik Rose but the Kings want expiring contracts. The Knicks have Dan Dickau’s and Fred Jones’ expiring contracts to include but this could not happen until August 28.

“Artest would love to be in New York, Sacramento would love to move him and the Knicks would love to have him. When you have three parties who want something, I have to believe — much like the Minny/Boston/KG situation — it’s going to get done,” said Bucher.

Hahn: Artest To Knicks Not Imminent
August 3, 2007 – 4:53 pm
Newsday –

If any of you heard about the internet rumor going around today that said Ric Bucher was reporting on ESPN radio that the Knicks were on the verge of getting Ron Artest, put it on iggy. At least for now.

Ken Berger made a quick call to a few of his contacts (you know Kenny got tight with the Tru Warier recently) and let me know there’s no merit to it one bit. I’m not sure about the validity of Bucher’s report, but I don’t know exactly what he reported, if he even reported anything.

Regardless, I asked a Knicks executive and was told this, “Last I heard, we were quiet. Real quiet.”

Again, for now.

We always have a reason to be skeptical. Firstly, I was in Vegas and spoke with someone who was close to Kevin McHale who told me Kevin has no plans to trade Garnett. But we were also hearing – like everyone else – that Ainge moved Wally Szczerbiak as a way to appeal to KG (and it didn’t hurt he got Ray Allen back in the deal), who wasn’t down with teaming up with Wally a second time.

So all is quiet and then – Bam. KG to Celts is done while we’re floating in a pool at an Orlando resort.

That’s why you check out every rumor, even if the organization insists nothing is doing.

But you also don’t jump the gun and believe it, either. Let’s see, by my count (and, I admit, some of my own reporting that never came to fruition), the Knicks were in on Chris Webber, Vince Carter, Jermaine O’Neal, Ron Artest, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Pau Gasol, Rasheed Wallace, Rashard Lewis, Steve Blake and Mo Williams.

Zach Randolph did happen and it was a done deal before it even made it to the rumor mill.

I’m of the belief that Artest will be a Knick by the time the season opens. It just makes sense. Isiah has told confidants that he feels Artest would make the Knicks a championship contender. But he also knows Artest would be a high risk-reward move, because of his mercurial personality. So you don’t give up a blue chip young player like David Lee in that kind of deal.
What a great surprise to have you with us, most people here don’t know you and are not familiar with your great knowledge about basketball. I am, because you, Fatty and I used to talk at LA-Times blog.

Hopefully you could visit more often, because this blog needs people like you. I have been spending the time I have set a side for blogging, here at getgarnett. They are changing the name very soon and they will add some new features.

Anyways, I’ll try to post here some. I’ve been working on another Zombie related piece that I’ve been posting over at the LB, but I doubt that I’ll post it here since this seems to be mostly basketball related. The K-Bros let me get away with a lot of my insanity over there.

Fatty needs to show the hell up. He’s a cool dude.

generic_one,

I will post again at Lakers Blog, maybe when we get closer to the training camp, but right now I have so much time to spend and I think these guys need it more than LA-times. Also, I am a bit uncomfortable with never ending hatred over there. K-Bros are paid to be fans, these guys are doing it out of their pocket and that’s the true fan spirit.

Actually, some of your Zombie posts are funny and if you remember; I used to use the name “Ventriloquist” at BL. The word zombie is originated back to Afro-Caribbean community and some would use wooden puppets for zombie shows, same as Ventriloquism. Most bloggers here are cool and have healthy sense of humor. You don’t try it, you’ll never know.

I feel that Mitch should just go with the deal to get JO.
Then we would have Kobe and JO to build around. We already have a center (Chris Mihm). We already have a top of the line vet point guard (Derek Fisher). Now all we need is a small forward.
Here is a good deal to get one.
(Radmonivic/Farmer/first rounder) for Artest.
If we are lucky sign Webber.
Fisher/Critt/Karl
Bryant/Evans/Vujivic
Artest/Walton/Cook
JO/Tarif/Brown
Mihm/Webber
What you all think?
I feel a Kobe-JO duo will be great to build around in the present and in the future.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/marty_burns/08/03/west.rankings/index.html

Saw this link…and apparently we are ranked 8th.
Honestly I think we are the fifth best team in the west with only spurs/mavs/suns/rockets ahead of us. I think when we’re healthy and running on full cylinders we crack the top 5. Nuggets/Warriors/Jazz just dont seem that good to me. We might not be contenders but I do think we are a dangerous team, with our current roster. People make it seem like our team is terrible but thats not really the case. We’re only getting better, Kobe hasnt peaked yet (cant even imagine him getting better than he already has but we all know he just keeps getting better day in day out), Odom i think is getting better and better playing with Kobe (the only problem with him is his desire and aggressiveness), our young guys walton/bynum and the rest are just getting better (hopefully). Weve beaten the best teams, weve shown we can WIN, but we arent consistent, lose to hornets but we beat dallas, beat spurs but not memphis. We just need a balanced and solid front court. I honestly think we are ONE key piece from being contenders, we dont need much, but doesnt seem like we are going to get that key piece this offseason, though. I think artest alone is enough, AK, and gasol even. We got a solid/strong backcourt with depth starting with Kobe-Fish(Great sign i think, vet leadership is huge in him) Evans/Farmar/Crit add really good depth. I think once we solidify our front court, kwame/bynum/turiaf???? not solid, we would be deadly and instant contenders. Any thoughts??
