screamESPN: Kobe Bryant offered himself up as bait and the Denver Nuggets bit. That freed up Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol on the inside, where the Lakers’ big men dominated.

With Bryant luring double coverage then passing to his teammates, the Lakers owned the fourth quarter in a 103-94 victory Wednesday night that gave them a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference finals.

Bryant scored 22 points — on just 13 shots — Odom had 19 points and 14 rebounds despite an aching lower back and Gasol added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

“It was a big gamble for me coming in, but I wanted to change my approach this game and be more of a decoy,” Bryant said after adding eight assists, several out of double-teams in the fourth quarter. “The past couple games they really were loading to my side and I figured I could be a decoy and try to give chances to my teammates.”

Game 6 is Friday in Denver, where the Lakers lost Game 4 by 19 points.

“That place is going to be rocking and rolling,” Bryant said. “We have to stay focused and poised and try to cut them up. Be cold-blooded, go out there and execute.”

Great Team Win…..Now Be Ready to go all out on friday to finish this an Advance to the Finals!

  • Lakerfan24

WOW!! that was a great win and we played well in key moments of the game.George Karl can’t even stop for a moment and recognize that we beat them, and we beat them good:deep inside the paint, deep inside their mouths..these Thuggets still talking about how they should’ve won game 1 or 3…LOL…wake up!!we are leading the series 3-2 and I really hope we give ourselves a chance to close them out in Denver.Game 6 will be the most important game of the year and we have to be mentally ready from the fist minute.I also think that D-Fish has become a liability at both ends of the floor with silly fouls and jacking up shots without giving a chance to our guys to get a rebound, we should start either Farmar or Shannon which are faster and at least they try to stay in front of Billups. That dunk by Brown on The Birdman,PRICELESS!!!

The Nuggets got robbed. It’s all good though. Denver will get all the calls on Friday. Nuggets will win game 7. Have fun fishing Laker fans!

  • RN

Shannon sparked the energy for the Lakers when he was in the game. Fisher had good 1st half but he is too slow and old. Again, he need to come off the bench or reduce to 10 mins a game. We need energy, especially in game 6.
Lamar was great in 2nd half. He found his game but cutting inside and move around. Most of the time he is lazy by standing around in the perimeter which I don’t understand why he did that. He is not an outside shooter.

Pau Gasol had a great second half, he finally figured it out how to defend the paint by blocking shots not just defending with his hands up.

Andrew showed some aggressiveness but he needs to be patient with his offense and defense he will be fine.

If the Lakers play like they played in the 4th quarter last night they are unbeatable.

The Denvers are better only when the Lakers did not show up.

  • lakerman1

The Nuggets did not get robbed anymore then the Lakers did in game 4′ it’s the suck ass officiating’ talk to David Stern as he sits perched on his throne as the all mighty white father. You are right though Denver will get the calls Friday and the Lakers will get it again Sunday’ thats why it pays to have home court advantage. The officiating is usally lopsided depending on location and the way fouls are called needs to be revamped during offseason. But we all know thats not going to happen. Anyway the Lakers out played Denver in the fourth in the same manner we were outplayed Monday. If you want to win in this league you better play harder.

  • AL the Laker Fan you should meet.

Lets close these chumps out on there homecourt on Friday…Will be the sweetest win next to holding up the trophy!

  • as1084

the idea of not starting fisher or reducing his minutes is useless…phil has a man cruch on fisher and will never have him come off the bench

  • jc

great great awesome win! shannon brown saved our a$$es out there last night! and it seemed like odom was on a candy high with that 19-14 crazy facial on chris andersen!

  • WifelovesLuke

The Nuggets (from the end of the 3rd to the beginning of the 4th quarter) missed 11 shots in a row and LA went on a 11-0 run to start the quarter. That’s what won the game. The refs had no affect on the outcome. Denver just got beat.

Don’t get too excited guys. LA hasn’t won back to back playoff games since game 2 and 3 in the Houston series. Winning game 6 in Denver is going to be tough.

  • as1084

whats surprising to me is that billups, who is supposed to be denver’s rock and leader, is starting to fall into the old run n gun style of the former nuggets. he is starting to take bad shot after bad shot and forcing the ball in transition even when they dont have a numbers advantage.

i like your diplomacy with this.
but there is no way you can say the calls were as lopsided for us as they were for denver the last game.
there was no flagrants that were insane. there were no lakers tripping carmelo anthony on purpose and not getting called for it. those are 3 or 4 point plays and momentum shifters in a game. the only foul that may have been seen as that was nene’s last call. but we had the momentum by them. it was given with brown’s dunk and our defensive stops. not by calls given to us.
so don’t play that game that george karl wants us and the league to play. the calls were not the same as in game 4. we didn’t play dirty, and the calls weren’t there stopping or starting momentum.
if you look at gasol’s or odom’s blocks, they are all clean, so that isn’t an excuse either, that was just great D that pumped up the momentum.

  • L.A. All The Way

The right team showed up to play yesterday! I am so proud of Odom for stepping it up. That is the potential I’ve been talking about, we are an AWESOME team and I know we could play like that all the time. Now let’s close these chumps on Friday already…I don’t think I can take a whole 7 games! LOL
Also, it was funny to see how the show-off, showboatin’ Nuggets replaced the smirk on their faces with a doo-doo look on their faces! LMAO!
As for the comment from GETLABRON, obviously you’re a Laker hater so why are you even on this site? I think you secretly love us, don’t you? Let’s see if you pop up with a comment when we finish you off…I doubt you will. HAHAHAHAHAAAAAHAHAHA!

    great article on the officiating.
    good for him.
this article just makes that Hollinger douche bag look like a complete sycophantic retard whose lips are permanently attached to the nuts of lebron james and the sphincter of david stern

and he actualy calls out lebron in that rediculous drive to the basket when he got bailed out by the refs with a foul on pietrus.

  • ilikebasketball

finally a sportswriter acknowledges the impact of that no call on the lakers loss:

” No accountability, no repercussions, nothing. Whenever they make a crucial mistake — such as all three refs missing J.R. Smith’s jump ball violation that helped decide Game 2 last week… “

    Kobe’s TEAM > LeBron’s TEAM

The Cavaliers are playing like the crappy 2005-2006 Lakers. Everyone stands around watching Kobe instead of getting involved. The last two years, with the addition of Gasol, Bynum, and Ariza, the Lakers have a stronger and more BALANCED TEAM. All you have to do is look at the last games in each conference. LeBron scores 40+ and they lose. Kobe scores 22 and they win.

The reffing has become a problem if only because it has become a MAJOR topic and features prominently in the coverage on SI and ESPN, not to mention the blogs, etc.

In the entertainment biz, perception = reality, so Stern better start dealing with this.

Finally, I am 99% sure this goes to Game 7 since ABC is slobbering over the prospect of a Sunday primetime game at Staples (courtside stars!) with the ratings it will garner.

Be prepared for a repeat of Game 4 officiating in Game 6.
