January 05, 2009 / Brisbane, Australia

Ana began her 2009 season in successful fashion as she beat world No.50 Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the Brisbane International. She sealed victory in an hour and 44 minutes and will face Italy's Roberta Vinci in round two.

Ana hit 61 per cent of first serves and broke her opponent five times on her way to her third straight victory against the Czech.

"I had to fight for each point and you know that's good, especially in the first match. You want to get into your rhythm and you want to stay tough for each point," said Ana.

"She was a tough opponent for a first round -- she likes to hit the ball very flat...I'm very happy to be through."

Qualifier Vinci reached round two courtesy of a 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Anna-Lena Groenefeld. The match between Ana and the Italian is set to take place on Wednesday.
