The Beverly Hills Cop star, 47, has been signed up by British director CHRISTOPHER NOLAN to reprise the role played by JIM CARREY in 1995’s Batman Forever.

Gotham villain ... Eddie Murphy

The surprise move follows speculation linking Pirates of the Caribbean star JOHNNY DEPP to the part.

The film, set for a 2010 release, is being developed under the working title Gotham.

Execs have also signed up rising Transformers star SHIA LABEOUF, 22, to play Robin.

CHRISTIAN BALE will return as Bruce Wayne, while MICHAEL CAINE will again play Bruce’s assistant Alfred.

Meanwhile, Brit RACHEL WEISZ is said to be up for the Catwoman role.

Insiders also revealed to The Sun the flick will end on a cliffhanger over whether Batman survives a blast at Wayne Towers.

Nolan had been tight-lipped about the future of the Batman films after being rocked by the January death of HEATH LEDGER — tipped to receive a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

A film insider said: “Chris wasn’t sure if he wanted to do another movie but as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion.

“Eddie’s a fantastic addition. Everyone’s excited to see what he does as the Riddler.”

Wait...

A representative for Eddie Murphy's denied the actor will take on the role of The Riddler in a new Batman movie.

Earlier this week a British tabloid newspaper claimed the Beverly Hills Cop star would take on the villainous quizmaster character in the latest outing in the Caped Crusader franchise.

The part was made famous by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever.

And the publication also suggested actor Shia Labeouf would play young crimefighter Robin, alongside returning Batman Christian Bale.

But Murphy's representative has refuted the claims, telling Access Hollywood the reports are "not true".

The movie, tentatively titled Gotham, is slated for a 2010 release.

In his defense, people thought the same thing when they heard Heath would be the next Joker.

That being said...

That'd be interesting.

Shia Labeouf would be GREAT as Robin.

British tabloids are known for how ridiculous they are. Since Nolan and his brother haven't even written a script, I won't take anything I hear about casting rumors for the next movie seriously. Hell, it's not even for certain that Chris Nolan will be back. It all depends on how much patience the WB execs have.

and goyer has always said he has a theme and villain in mind already

I'm pretty sure the only good movie Eddie has starred in was "Coming to America". Oh wait, and "Norbit". Kidding.
