[HEY ITS JOEY]

Thought this would be an interesting subject where we could post pictures that we have taken ourselves of the many things around us - sort of like an art gallery.

Or, if you've got questions about photography, wondering what kind of camera to get, ask away..I know there's a few photographers on here

looking to get into photography..

i know i asked you before(cant find the other thread).. but what kinda camera should i get... and what lenses are a MUST to start off with...

i want DSLR.. something really nice.. but doesnt have to be top of the line...

i'm looking into starting a mini business and taking classes.. any help would be GREATLY appreciated thanks Joey

well Darth, if you're just starting off and aren't worried about top of the line models, i'd look into these cameras

Canon XSi - 12mp, integrated cleaning sensor, 3.5 frames/second, 3" lcd with live view, new image processor, compact and lightweight. usually comes with the 18-55mm kit lens, which is okay to start off with, but eventually you might want more zoom or a faster shooting lens. faster meaning its aperture (1.2, 1.4, 2.0-4.0 those are usually good apertures)

Nikon d40 - cheap, great camera. only 6mp i think. my friend has it, very nice camera. but it doesn't have an auto focus motor so with some Nikon lenses you'll only be able to use manual focus

for Canon, if you buy new you'll usually get the 18-55mm EF-S lens which is okay to start off with, but you'll eventually want more zoom or a faster shooting lens.

I can't really say which lens is a MUST, it depends on what you plan on taking pictures of.

for portraits, i'd go for prime lenses (fixed zoom lenses: 85mm, 24mm, 50mm) they usually are fast shooting lenses, and the 50mm is real cheap, under $100

landscapes, you probably should look into telephoto lenses, 70-200, 28-200, 24-105

general purpose lenses would be like 24-70mm, 17-40mm, 24-105mm

i would look into prime lenses then, like i mentioned. 85mm f/1.8 or 50mm f/1.8

d80, d90 would be mid level dSLRs
d40 is more of an entry level dSLR

with the d90 i read you can shoot movies as well. more MP, cleaning system, live view, wider ISO range, better auto focus system (face detection), a lot more. i really can't compare the d90 with the d40 because its overall better than the d40.

I just got into this whole photography business. My camera isn't all that nice but it's a camera. Anyway, I tried adjusting the settings manually but I was confused as heck. I have no idea what those little things were. Any tips joey on what and how to adjust things manually? lol

what kind of camera again?
if you can control your aperture (the f-number) you can control your depth of field and exposure to light. a large aperture would be f/1.4-3, while a small aperture would be f/5-8. you'll notice when you have a large aperture you'll get a fast shutter speed, and the opposite with a large aperture.

you just have to play around with it, honestly thats how i learned.

but yeah just do your research, and compare brands/models. i'm biased since I have a Canon 40D, but Nikons are great cameras too. I've gotten 3 of my friends to upgrade to d-SLRs :lol:
