This is a great article by Kevin Ding of the OC Register. Let's hope our new Defensive Coordinator, Kurt Rambis, has figured out how to make the adjustments.

Like Down Low wit I low... like Issac lowenkron said... in the begining of the season.. the lakers were ready to start the season after that finals lost... unlike the other team that were berly getting their roster ready and figuring out guys postions.. the lakers were already pass that and beat the team easily.. but now the teams have adjusted and have caught up to the lakers. So yeah I agree with you.

Teams aren't rusty anymore? That's your excuse?

That explains why the Cavs or Celts don't win by double figures anymore............ oh wait.

i was obviously saying our defense looked good early because everyone else was rusty and we weren't because we have essentially the same team as last year and that our defense might have just never been that good to begin with

but if you want you can keep going

I think the Lakers are just not executing as a team...they started off too hot, and ignored most of the major flaws.

Here is what I think of the defense (from another thread):

We always lost leads...when we stopped hitting shots. We built the leads by going on 14-0 spurts, not by forcing the other team into bad shots and outrebounding them.

That's where so many people were BLINDED by the Lakers early defensive "prowess". It was keyed by a POOR defensive strategy (gambling, anticipation, getting into passing lanes) instead of stopping scores at the rim, rebounding, staying home. That's why it was always FLASH-pan quick and just as fleeting, like a dream.

We didn't play good TEAM defense for any significant stretch. Too much "I can get a steal anytime I want to". Too much "let ME shut this guy down". That's why all it takes is 2 passes to score on the Lakers. Get the ball past Kobe or Ariza, force either to help AFTER the drive has started and they will foul you or give up the layup. Simple as that. They can hurt you by playing 2nd base and sometimes man-to-man but never in a double play.

Andrew hasn't protected the rim as expected.
Pau has NEVER protected the rim like that.
Fisher is using his strength and IQ to APPEAR like a decent defender when in truth, he's hanging on by a thread.
Kobe's not there mentally right now.
Luke - say no more. Vlad was hit or miss.

Did I miss something? Summary - individuals played better defense at the start of the year...the team, not on a consistent basis.

If only it was that easy. People think being in the East automatically makes everything different. The middle of the West might be better than that of the East, but the top of the East is better than the top of the West, and the bottom of the West is worse than the bottom of the East.

The difference in conferences in more evident as the season goes on cuz they play east teams 4 times, but right now when comparing, we have played a lot of the same teams as the Cavs/Celts. Last 5 games, Celts played 4 teams all of whom we've played. Whooped on Indiana, whooped on Blazers, beat Indiana, whooped on Wiz, beat NO by double figures. I thought teams just weren't rusty anymore?

Agreed, hence why I disagreed with the rusty excuse.

Teams have the blueprint, can they execute.

Two different things.

Just keep improving.

We do need to tweak our scheme up a bit. I don't understand our need to trap at almost EVERY trip down on the defensive end. Lately it's been leading to wide open looks for the other team. We also need to minimize the gambling for steals.

The trapping part is perfect. It's the heart of the scheme we have in place.

The problem is the help rotation. It's not happening. That's why we are getting beat. They are forcing teams to pick the ball up off the dribble. That's a GOOD thing. They are jumping the passing lanes once the drive is dead. That's great. They just aren't finding the OTHER option.

With the trap, someone has to play 2nd base. They have use their speed and anticipation to play to guys on the opposite side of the court. Usually, that's Kobe or Ariza. Sometimes Sasha and Farmar. The problem is the 2nd baseman it not making good decisions...or he's not paying enough attention.

That's the problem.
