Andrew Bynum has a request for Coach Phil Jackson, something that's more than a minor favor to ask -- he wants more playing time in the fourth quarter. The 21-year-old Lakers center has sat out the final minutes of the team's last three close games. He did not play the last 3:49 against Phoenix, the last 6:12 against Sacramento and the last 5:41 against Washington. He also sat out all but 12 seconds of the last 5:32 against Indiana. "I don't understand why I'm not in at the end of the game," Bynum said. "It doesn't make much sense to me, but it's something I have to deal with. I haven't been in foul trouble the last couple of games, so I have no idea." Bynum has struggled with pick-and-roll defense, and Jackson believes there is no margin for error in the late stages of tight games, of which there have been many for the Lakers. "When he shows the ability to play defense appropriately, he'll probably be there," Jackson said.

Phil's effin' with Bynum like he did Kobe during the Shaq years. Andrew will be a better player because of this.

Drew is getting too demanding <_< He should leave the coaching things to Phil...

I have to agree with Phil. Despite all the talk over the off-season about being a defensive force, Bynum really hasn't been one. His mere presence in the key does help, but he has to have the "every rebound is my rebound" and "no one will get a shot off in the paint as long as I'm here" attitudes. Cowherd just pointed out a few minutes ago that Fisher has outrebounded Bynum more than once already. Bynum seems more offensive-minded, which is understandable because he is young, and young guys want their points. But hopefully throughout the year he'll develop a true understanding of how big of a threat he can be on the defensive end, and his offensive output pales in comparison to his defensive impact.

You are right on the money, Daco. Bynum is rarely in position to block shots as the weak side defender and that, along with dominating the boards, should be his primary role on the team. It nauseates me to see all these points in the paint when we have Gasol and Bynum in there. Philip is doing the right thing. Andrew should work harder at improving his game and quit whining. He's only 21 and he's not Shaq. I've been concerned about that big contract and I'm sure that is part of Philip's thinking, too. He doesn't want young Andrew to feel too entitled.

Actually im gonna go with Andrew on this one.

I've been wondering why he wont let Andrew finish the game, he always takes him out with about 4-5 minutes left in the game. He is our best shot blocker, he can alter shots even though at the end of games teams manage to burn our perimeter defenders for threes, and he can also hit his free throws.

But I do agree that Phil is most likely using mind games and that Bynum will become a better player bc of this.

I like this. Odom is one of the worst 4th quarter players anyways, so I want Bynum yo close also.

Good to see you here, too, Hayter. Great story how I wound up here. I went to the Suns game the other night. My seats are aisle seats in the first row in one of the 300 sections (great seats actually - only $28!) For whatever reason, I turned around and who's standing there? Vic the Brick with some flunky from KLAC and the flunky gave me a card for The Lakers Nation. He gave me a "Feelin' You!" and I asked his opinion about the trade (he thought it was a great deal for the Suns). As he was leaving I said, "Hey what's going on with the message boards?" He didn't know, but the flunky told me the Lakers forum was "moving" over here. Fred is probably spending his time trying to talk his girlfriend into having sex with him, so he probably doesn't know. I'll see if I can send him and The Dude and some of the others a message with the hope that they'll get it.

As for Luke starting, you know I loved it and I was thrilled to be there for the surprise. The starters look so much more fluid with him. He does so much more than Buzz Kill and with Kobe, Gasol, Bynum and Fish out there, do we really need Buzz Kill to "spread the floor?" I think Luke will help at both ends of the floor to help "spread the wealth." I hope Philip is patient with this.

After re-thinking this, I say this is good. He is making Bynum earn that spot in the 4th, by making him hungrier. Come playoff time, you can expect Bynum to be out here at times like this. But, for now, this is just adding fuel to Bynum.
