He was "too cool" to play in college. He wore sun glasses to his press conference in the high school gym to announce his decision to jump to the NBA. He grew up wealthy, and privileged, and Philly is a blue collar town.
He was also very early in the "hs to NBA era", and it was still not well respected.
Then, he beat the Sixers in the NBA Finals in 2001.
**Note. His first NBA game was not in Philly. That season (96-97), the Lakers first two games were at home, and then they went to Madison Square Garden, where Kobe got his first NBA point, on a free throw **

Cause he turned out to be such a GREAT player, and they are mad that he doesn't play for them. haha.
Sorry Philly...We have Kobe, and you can't have him back! Live with it!
But seriously, I think they should support him if anything, heck if he came from where I live I wouln't be mad at him, I would think that was awesome! haha

He didn't give any serious consideration into playing for Villanova and the people in Philly kind of took it as a slap in the face.
Then after the comments he made in 2001 that just gave them more reason to boo.

He's from the Philadelphia suburbs, speaks Italian, and has no "street cred", in the way other young kids from the Philadelphia inner-city supposedly have. He is no Rocky Balboa.

yea i think that is the reason, they think of him as a sellout.
I remember becuz at the same time almost everyone(well almost all the black people) favored iverson over kobe becuz he had the street/thug look and kobe was looked at as the arrogant suburban kid.
also another reason people(black women) didnt like him was becuz he married a mexican girl.
