Did LAkers have $ to bring in a max guy now? Yes

Do LAkers have $ to bring 1 in next yr? Yes

So come again as to why Kobe contract made free agents decide not to come?

No talent. Elite players want to be on winners not project teams.

FO knows exactly what theyre doing. Kobe is a commodity and puts butts in the seats. So they signed him. And KB wanted to cash in on the lil bit of basketball and/or star power he may have left in him. So they gladly reached a deal knowing the franchise had no shot of being competitive, but would be a hot ticket for KBs farewell seasons and money would still roll in. And KB wasnt gonna get the max on ANY other team. So they both win. Meanwhile they hope to develop Kobes successor.

You are assuming that one max guy would fix most of our issues.  It would not.

Kobe's contract isn't what did the Lakers in, it did limit some of what they could have done this offseason but the reason why the Lakers are in the position they are now started long before Kobe's deal

this

Mitch said there were different plans depending on different scenarios. Said plan target changes from 6 months, to a year, year and a half and even up to 2 years depending on what happens. I'm assuming Melo not coming puts us on the 2 year plan, especially considering all of these contracts we have now are only for a year to 2.

There is a plan, we the fans just do not know what it is and that's scary to a lot here for some reason. We've never been told before what the next moves were and we shouldn't be. We're fans, not running the business.

I think a lot of people here are upset because Kobe most likely wont win another ring. It is what it is as far as I'm concerned. Signing Thomas, Monroe, Lance, etc would have put together a fun team but it would have hurt us long term and just kept us as a playoff team, not a contender.

The cap space is IRRELEVANT.  What do the Lakers have right now to attract a star AWAY from his team?  You think in 2016 KD wants to come to a barren Lakers team who will for sure have less talent than is already on OKC?  2015 max players are 2 PFs and 1 C in Marc Gasol.  Signing a PF in 2015 is basically hoping or betting against Randle becoming a star.  Depending on Memphis' success next year Marc could be attainable but he's going to be 30 years old and while Marc is a great talent he doesn't push the needle on his own and shouldn't be the first max deal you invest your team in.

The only thing LA can sell to players is past success but that means nothing in the span of a 4 year deal.

The CP3 thing is big excuse a lot of fans use as well.  Lakers had plenty of chances to right the ship after that.

No Im saying even with Kobe massive 2 yr deal LA had $ to spend is the only pt & they could have gotten a top guy.

I mentioned this earlier actually. Although the organization has done a lot for Kobe by putting him in a position to win 5 titles (something many other players cannot say), I have been a Lakers and thus Kobe fan for quite some time now. I was hoping he could get a send off similar to MJ in '98 going out with his 6th ring. I feel that would cement his legacy as a top 5 if not top 2-3 player of all time and silence many critics who ride LBJs nuts all the time. Even after last season, I had a small glimmer of hope that with a successful offseason this summer and the next, the Lakers would be in a strong position come 2015-2016. That hope is no longer there.

it all started in 2011 when we lost to dallas in the 2nd round i think..

things fell apart and we barley even made it through the first round in game 7 against the hornets and cp3

Not really. They won't experience the lows we will for the next 2-3 years missing the playoffs struggling to win 30 games. The Heat with Deng..Bosh and Wade are still a top 3-4 team in the East for the foreseeable future. They can also build thru the draft...I think they have most of there picks in the coming years.

Nobody is bigger loser than Pat Riley & Wade

Lebron chose to go to CLE on his own accord for whatever reason.  Cavs still have better pieces in play than LA.  Call it a project all you want they have 3-4 highly talented guys under the age of 22.  LA has 1.

What are the Cavs? project team son stop it!

I don't put too much blame on the Dallas series, as the CP3 deal was solid and if you remember the few hours before the veto, D12 was almost certainly on his way over too. Where things started to fall apart was when they hired Mike Brown, then passed up Phil over MDA, and then didn't fire MDA to keep Dwight. There's been a long string of terrible decisions.
