What would it take for this to happen again and who's interested in participating?

Another idea that has been tossed around is for Wade to have the lead in setting it up/running it...assuming he's interested.

I don't know what this is but I'm interested.

Every participant picks (All Time Draft) an "All Time" team of ten or twelve players and we compete against each other. Last couple of times, the writing is what did the league in from my viewpoint...wayyyyy too much writing. We need some kind of sim program maybe.

The first time, iirc, I had a team of Shaq, Rodman, McHale, and some other players I can't remember right now.

I remember I had Erving, Stockton, Ewing and Mourning on my roster the first time we did this.

I'm interested.

You see this little hole? This moth's just about to emerge. It's in there right now, struggling. It's digging it's way through the thick hide of the cocoon. Now, I could help it - take my knife, gently widen the opening, and the moth would be free - but it would be too weak to survive. Struggle is nature's way of strengthening it." - John Locke

the draft was so much fun... loved my team last time...

AM 100% down to do it again... as long as there are some calrifications this time...

Like... lets run it by a Sim program... Not writing big paragraphs...

Proposal...

16 team league...

4 division... each run by one person (this makes It easier for  sim purposes)

have a 30 game season (each team plays each other twice)

then we have a 16 team seeded playoff.

That's the basic outline... would be a lot more fun than... Take turns writing paragraphs...

there like literally dozens of Ideas that I got that would make this work well, and better than last time...

The draft was so fun.. but then... it was finished and everyone was excited, and then someone said... Alright, now write a 10 paragraph story.... and we can have a populatity contest on who wins...

I'm thinking I will be able to help with the reboot in July. Some additional feedback would be useful. First, I assume:

  • Select any player from any season (but keep in mind the further back you select, the more difficult it is to compare to more modern era players)
  • You can have up to 12 players, must have 10 minimum
  • The league will have 16 registered GMs
  • Draft picks will be assigned to GMs using a randomization method

Any tweaks to those points? Also, how do we want to do trades? How many games per series are we thinking? Also, how do we want to balance automation and community forum board interaction? How do we balance game plans while cutting down on writing?

I was thinking the draft and registration could be more automated (PHP), and if someone misses their pick, I will use a randomization method to assign a player that has not yet been drafted. The game plan and judging might involve some forum interactivity, but we could make this more automated over time (and as there are more suggestions).

If anyone has any theories or proofs of concepts on creating a solid simulation system, I am all ears. This sounds very fun!

  • Draft picks will be assigned to GMs using a randomization method

I will use a randomization method to assign a player that has not yet been drafted.

Randomly assigning seeds should not be too difficult: randominteger[ {1,16}, 1]

If a GM does not draft in time, there are multiple ways to random draft:

random NBA player

or, for more randomization and perhaps a better chance of not drafting a "no name," follow this procedure:

First, randominteger[ {1950,2014}, 1] to return a year.

Second, assign numbers to various traits (ppg, spg, bpg, rpb) as 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively, then randominteger[ {1,X}, 1]

Third, create reasonable ranges for each of the various traits listed in #2 (e.g. [1,30] for points per game) and return a random integer based on the result of #2

Fourth, use results of #1 #2 and #3 to randomly select a player

So if #1 returned the year 1976, #2 returned the number 1 (which represents points per game with a range of 1 to 30 points), and #3 returned the number 21, the randomization query would become: NBA player with more than 21 points per game 1976

This obviously returns 17 results:

  • Rudy Tomjanovich (1)
  • Ron Boone (2)
  • Rick Barry (3)
  • Pete Maravich (4)
  • Paul Westphal (5)
  • Larry Kenon (6)
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (7)
  • Julius Erving (8)
  • John Drew (9)
  • George McGinnis (10)
  • George Gervin (11)
  • Elvin Hayes (12)
  • David Thompson (13)
  • Dan Issel (14)
  • Bob McAdoo (15)
  • Bob Lanier Jr. (16)
  • Billy Knight (17)

Use one more random integer method to fit the range of your 17 returned players: randominteger[ {1,17}, 1]

Say this returns the integer 13. David Thompson becomes your draft pick, assuming no other GM has already drafted him.

I would say that we should go with a modified version of what we did last time - simulations would probably just confuse everyone and make the process even longer.

My suggestion -

Create a template with very direct questions regarding the team and the matchup that the GM is going up against. An example -

Offensive system or play #1 - Pick and roll with players A and B

Offensive system or play #2 - Double post with players A and B

Defensive system or play #1 - Man, stay home with shooters

Defensive system or play #2 - Man, switch everything

Double teams - Players A and B will double team player X on the opposing team when in the post.

Fast break - 25%. Players will rarely look to push the ball. Slowed down, grind it out tempo

Starting lineup -

6th man, order of bench -

If the questions are direct and to the point, there's not much writing involved. Instead, there's more theorizing what would be best for your chosen team

I'd also suggest a large panel of judges, hopefully more than 5 or 6, so we can get a variety of different opinions on different match ups and so on. Judges would vote for the series winner.

Another suggestions I'd have is for the draft. We should create player pools and have them broken up into tiers so an auto-pick can be taken if a pre-chosen player is available at the time of choosing. I haven't entirely made up my mind on how this would exactly work, but it's an idea in the making lol
