Here are the new rules for this year:

While last year's competition also featured six competitors divided into Eastern and Western Conference categories, this time the conferences will actually be treated as teams.

In the first round, the Freestyle Round, each dunker will have 90 seconds to do as many dunks as he wants. When that's over, a panel of judges will then decide the winning conference.

The dunkers from that winning conference will get to choose whether to go first or second in the East vs. West dunking matchups that will take place in the second round, the Battle Round. Judges will pick the winner of each battle, with the first team to win three head-to-head matchups declared the winner of the competition. Yes, this means there will be no more 50s, just "winners."

If you are confused about how a team can be crowned the winner of what has always been an individual competition, so are we. There will sort of still be an individual champion, though -- fans will be able to vote online for the "Sprite Slam Dunker of the Night" via text, Twitter, NBA.com and the NBA GameTime app.

Take the fan vote out. Take out this bull[expletive] about teams. Get the dunk contests legends out there to decide a winner for Christ's sake. How hard can that be?

I hate that they had to switch up when they finally got some names in it.

My expecatitions are very low for this though even with 3 All-Star's in it. Every dunk possible has already been done before.

They need to eliminate this team concept stuff.  It takes the competition out of it between individuals.  And they need to bring back the scoring.

NOW I like the freestyle round for the first dunk.

Same here, but you're wrong about the second statement:

Sadly though, don't see any of these NBAers busting out any of those dunks. Hope I'm wrong of course though.

yo.

Sometimes I wonder if they don't try some dunks cause they fear injury.

Those guys can be fearless with some of their dunks cause they don't have careers to worry about.

I mean those extreme car dunks and stuff.

The dunk contest that SHOULD be seen is the amateur dunk contest on NBATV

Freestyle is kind of a nice concept for purists.

I thought at the point where it became so dependent on props was also borderline lame.

Lillard in between the legs was nice.

What the [expletive] is this??? They destroyed the dunk contest. I'm not liking this at all! Why go away from tradition with individual performances and score cards?

Alright time for individual dunks.  The first round was a freestyle round.   I'm glad they brought that back.

Drake should've lobbed it but whatever.

Lillard should've won that head to head.
