I would take Hill back at 5-6M a year no doubt.  I think a team desperate for a big man will overpay him though.  I think 8-9M would be way too much for him.

That's why we should consider moving him.

People usually freak out when you suggest it, but i think we need to look at the big picture here.

If we can get Melo for around 17 mil, we'll be able to get some decent players around him. Or we get him via S&T.

In my situation last night, the team looks decent, but is missing a god danm rim protector to win a title. That's like a 5 seed out West at best. Maybe it's better to leave Melo in the dust and intensely peruse LeBron James.

And I'm glad about it

Let LeBron have his legacy cemented elsewhere and let us build with someone else

You are living in a dream world if you think Melo is going to play for 4years/70M on a team that is in no better shape than the team that could give him nearly double that.

Touche' but we aren't in good shape and don't have a roster set for next year.  Melo can simply walk to Dallas for the same money with a roster set.  I'd rather not cramp out flexibility for a guy that can't do anything but score in Iso or the occasional spot up.

How is that any different from having Kobe and someone like Blake or Farmar at PG?

Melo strikes me as a guy who would love the LA life... doesn't really seem like a texan kind of guy lol. If we add our bench next year, healthy kobe, melo... i think we're good enough to get into the playoffs.. and I trust we could make noise if we make the playoffs with a kobe playing

The two real options for Melo are to either re-sign in New York or come to the Lakers.

The Clippers could make a run at him but they will need to give up Blake Griffin at the minimum.

While I don't think the Lakers sacrifice their pursuit of Kevin Love for Melo, the influence of Kobe Bryant, who has been a big brother to Melo since entering the league, cannot be ignored.

I ultimately see the Lakers offering Melo less than the max to sign.

Possibly.

Lot's of pieces have to fall into place.  We'll get a better idea immediately after the season ends.  I have zero doubt in my mind that Melo is not coming here if D'Antoni is still the coach.

then we'd better prepare for Love or Rondo, because I don't think D'antoni is honestly going anywhere till his contract ends and the Lakers aren't going to fire him for the sake of getting Carmelo.

I don't think the Kobe factor is as big as some think. That's just me.  I don't think it was Kobe who saved Pau and he couldn't get Jim to ship Bynum out for him either.  I wouldn't ignore Dallas or Chicago as possible destinations either.  If teams want him they will make the moves.

Hard to make a case for him to be fired.  Not sure what coach available makes THIS current team better.  I'm no fan of MDA but what kind of message do you send for potential suitors when he's coached them to around .500 for a third of the year with their star player being out and their 2nd best being extremely some timey.
