Lakers have always spent enough money to win, but now if you look at the Jim-Mitch combo since 2011 when Phil retired.

Chris Paul trade

The insight to know that Pau and Lamar had to go after 2011 to keep Kobe realistically competitive.
That's blocked. New CBA and we have fish, Luke and Kapono, and we get Sessions and Hill though we were close to Beasley

Lost Ramon
Got Steve Dwight and Jamison.
Lost two and Metta with bit also a lot of ego left the building
Earl came and left, but good acquisition

Well according to some people here, Jim Buss is the biggest idiot in the world and we have no idea what we're doing.

KOBE. #VINO. BRYANT.

for all the gems they say the front office missed.  They found Farmar, Ariza, Bynum and found Earl Clark and now Xavier Henry thus far.

Why draft and develop. Get guys entering their primes.

The Lakers don't have that kind of patience.

The Lakers guy guys that were high draft picks but hadn't reached their potential yet and put them in a system that takes full advantage of their strengths.

Yep. But its a good thing all GM's dont think this way. hard enough competing for talent without everyone going for the same strategy. When the lakers got dwight from orlando after snagging shaq from orlando 15 years earlier i was beginning to think they were our very own personal triple A team.

I would say spurs are also the gold standard.

Praying for 1. Kobe's Health (looks pretty good so far), 2. High Draft Pick (Randle...injured game #1.*sigh*) 3. Miracle Trade (Not yet), 4. Quality Free Agent (Boozer, kind of, Davis, nice upside!), 5. Brilliant Coaching Hire (Byron!...but the jury is out)

Teams who trade for players are often more successful than those who work through the draft.

Yeh for losing

Exactly. Except for the 29 or 30 teams that have a worse record over the last 15 years then them. The 4 trophies and the countless coaches, asst coaches, gm's, and front office personnel that have gone on to success with other franchises. I mean, except for those rather minor details, yeah.

Which makes their losing that much worse.

4 trophies?

'06-'07 was so long ago.

How many times have they been the top seed (or near the top) and choked?

[expletive] Boston and [expletive] San Antonio

I'm not saying lets be fans. But as a longtime laker fan, there are certain teams it feel much more satisfying to beat, watch, etc.

Boston will probably always be #1, but spurs are probably #2 when it comes to teams i respect/hate.

Can't tell you how many fans of the celtics ive met over the years where we get into these "can you believe the history these teams have against each other" discussions.

Ive come to view rivalries as crucial to my interest in the sport. Always killed me lakers play boston only twice during season during all those epic fights.

And nothings more gratifying than watching spurs and celtics lose big series.

...I mean i LOVED when spurs lost game 6 and then finals in game 7 after popovich held out duncan, mano, and parker, and green during that big regular season game against miami EVERYONE was looking forward to. Serves the turd right.

Just saying they have a good organization...not that im a fan

That's the only time I care to watch them...when they lose. They're boring...always have been.

You guys do realize at the spots the Lakers typically draft there isn't top flight talent to develop right?

Hindsight is 20/20.  Easy to be an armchair GM when you know the future.

Get over yourself.

The landscape of the NBA is not as great for the lakers as one would think.  Lakers always win with SUPERSTARS leading them.  Sure we can go out and get good players and become a one hit wonder detroit pistons of 2004 or the Indiana Pacers but when you look at all their 16 championships, name me one that doesn't have a superstar.   So the question to you is this. Who is the next superstar out there when Kobe retired to take the throne?  Take Lebron out of the picture, I'll bet you guys have trouble naming one superstar that is capable of going to the lakers the next two years or so.  The only guy we can actually get is Melo? Really?

Name all the superstars in the NBA right now. Im not saying name all the all stars. Im saying superstars.  Every one of those superstars will most likely stay with their team.  What will the lakers do in the future when Kobe retires? So the front office is doing its best to make it a championship teams. And if any of you guys think the lakers can win with just good players you guys dont know the history of the Lakers.

MDA is an offensive genius. I hope he sticks to his guns and keeps doing what he does best: Run and Gun. That's the only way to coach.

One year ago today, harden was on OKC and Houston was terrible

Epicwolf, the NBA STARS move every year. It'll happen again
