The USC Trojans have fired coach Lane Kiffin not six hours after dropping to 3-2 after a blowout loss to Arizona State.

Trojans athletic director Pat Haden broke the news to Kiffin after the team's arrival back in Los Angeles early Sunday morning after the 62-41 loss at Tempe, Ariz., the school said in a statement on its website.

USC has lost seven of their past 11 games dating to last year and both of their first two in Pac-12 play this season.

Not surprising at all. Saw this coming the day they hired him.

Great day in USC history.  Time to close the book on the Kiffin era and start on path back to being the program that we need to be.

The lack of pride and passion displayed last night was terrible.  To be embarrassed by the likes of ASU should never happen to a program like USC.

Kiffen has always been a coach that has been hired on name and not by merit or skilled shown by coaching. Good call for USC. Apparently one of the leading candidates for the job is Denvers DC Jack Del Rio, what do you USC fans think of him for hire?

Jack Del Rio is always a name linked to the program.

As of right now, I'm not sure.  I would like to hire a college coach, opposed to a NFL guy.  USC needs to adjust to the new system of CFB.

I don't know why JDR would leave the Broncos after a possible championship run to head to a rebuilding USC team.

If Chip Kelly fails in the NFL or grows impatient, maybe he can come over. He would obviously give the offense a whole new life and probably make things exciting & fun again.

I don't know why JDR would leave the Broncos after a possible championship run to head to a rebuilding USC team.

There are several reasons, but the main & easiest one to think of is simply, money.

Stupid decision by USC. He was the perfect coach for their program. I love seeing them fail.

You don't know why? It's very easy to see why.

He's an assistant coach who would have a chance to go back to alma mater and bring the USC program back to prominence.

That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to Jack Del Rio, but I'd rather have us look at college coaches before going after NFL guys.

Who's to say he wouldn't eventually replace John Fox in Denver?

I guess I'd rather stay put and have a chance at a SB (this year and next) than rebuild at USC.

Being the DC for a team that has won a SB he'd be able to coach pretty much anywhere he wants (assuming he rather be a HC in the NFL than college).

It sucks having a new DC pretty much every season.

You don't rebuild in college. USC still gets top 10 and even top 5 recruiting every year

The sanctions are almost gone

It's not a rebuilding job. It's not the pros where you have the same players every year and eventually need to change

Hence rebuild

You rebuild in college every year because juniors and seniors leave every year

USC is still a top 3 job in college football, it is a job that everyone not named nick saban wishes they could have

I meant it in the sense that the program never rebuilds

The program is what it is and it either has a good coach or doesn't

Alabama before nick saban was mediocre but still had great players. Nick just brought his coaching and those players developed

A good coach will have USC back to prominence immediately

He made it sound like USC was a project. It's not you lose players every year. USC will always have the players

Get a good coach and they'll be a perennial national title contender again

Do you think USC currently has the QB to bring it back to prominence?

Rebuilding is such a weird term in college sports.  USC isn't exactly rebuilding, because they have talented players and that is a constant staple in the program.  If they had poor talent, it would be a different situation, but the fact is that they get talent, it's just on a reduced basis at the current moment because of limited scholarships.

USC is one of the top jobs in football, pro or college.  A few years ago, no one wanted to touch it because of the impending sanctions that were being dropped on USC's head.  Now with the sanctions coming to an end, it's a top job again that many coaches will be lining up for.

He reportedly is interested in the USC job, but whoever Haden hires will have to have a long-term vision and the purpose of staying 5 or more years.  If JDR wants to get back as an NFL head coach in a year or two, this job isn't for him.

JDR will have offers once his contract expires in Feburary, NFL and college.

The way I look at it, when you have a good recruiting base like Alabama, USC, Texas, Florida St, Ohio St, etc, then you just have to bring in competent coaches to develop and coach these young players.

Alabama wasn't mediocre before Saban (Crimson Tide is a historic college football team); the RECRUITING had dropped off that's all.

You look at the few years before Saban came to town (January '07)

2004: 19th ranked recruiting class

2005: 16th ranked recruiting class

2006: 18th ranked recruiting class

Now look at '07 and beyond:

2007: 22nd ranked recruiting class

2008: 1st ranked recruiting class (Julio Jones, Mark Barron, Marcell Dareus, Courtney Upshaw, Dont'a Hightower, Mark Ingram)

2009: 2nd ranked recruiting class (Trent Richardson, Eddie Lacy, Dre Kirkpatrick, Chance Warmack, DJ Fluker, AJ McCarron)

2010: 4th ranked recruiting class (Dee Milliner, CJ Mosley)

2011: 7th ranked recruiting class (three 5 stars/twelve 4 stars)

2012: 2nd ranked recruiting class

2013: 4th ranked recruiting class

2014: 1st ranked recruiting class

*Scout rankings

In essence, I'm agreeing with you...I was just harping on your "do/don't" contradiction.
