Nash practiced today

Yep he's been doing full practices.   I think their goal is to have Nash healthy by the time Kobe gets back.

D'antoni wants our entire starting lineup HEALTHY when they return.

He doesn't want Kobe returning and Nash barely holding on because we ran him 35 mins a night.

Gasol needs to play with more consistency and intensity. Nash looks like he already retired out there lol

Practice Update: Day 25   Gasol wants to pick and roll more than post up,  D'antoni going big, Rambis working primarily with the big men

  1. Kurt Rambis is taking the big men through screen/roll drills. https://vine.co/v/hIqbMee9i9O

The Lakers are finishing up practice in Houston, with the bigs on one end and wings/guards the other.

    f80575dc471a11e39166124a9393de5f_8.jpg

Asked D’Antoni what the offense needs, esp. w/screen and roll: “What we’re missing is a dynamic force going to the basket.”

Players have option to either pop or roll in screen/roll, and LAL bigs have been popping a lot. But D’Antoni wants rolling “90%” of time.

In other words, LAL’s offense isn’t as dynamic as staff had hoped, in part because they aren’t getting rolling bigs or penetrating guards.

Gasol said after practice that he’d like to so more rolling moving forward. Screen/roll w/him & Kobe was LAL bread and butter in title runs.

Here's a @paugasol transcript from Houston, including ?'s about playing against Howard for the first time: http://on.nba.com/1baOSnO

Don’t be surprised if we have a line up change vs HOU, w/LAL going bigger. Could mean Hill (who started 2nd half at DAL) or Kaman starting.

Mike D'Antoni said the Lakers would "probably" go big in the starting lineup to match up with Dwight Howard & Omer Asik

Jordan Hill said that he didn't know if it would be him or Chris Kaman starting against HOU but that D'Antoni said they'd be going big

Pau on Dwight's health: "We knew he wasn’t 100 pct ... That’s what he shared ... He had the shoulder issue as well. But we all had issues"

Pau on the importance running pick-and-roll in the halfcourt: "Our guards are not too fast so we have to create advantages other ways"

As more news comes I shall post it!

D'antoni wants less mid range jumpers, more to the basket finishes.

“(We need) more rolling, that’s what we want to do,” said D’Antoni after Wednesday’s practice in Houston ahead of Thursday’s game against the Rockets. “Mid-range shots aren’t the best thing in the world, so if that’s all you’re trying to get, that’s not a winning formula.”

I asked D’Antoni to what degree he’d prefer his big men roll, as opposed to pop.

“Almost 90 percent of the time we want you to roll hard, because we have another big that plays with (the roller) and he’d be the popper. You always have one shooter outside.”

And what is lacking?

“What we’re missing is a dynamic force going to the basket,” revealed D’Antoni. “Kobe (Bryant) would give you that, but we don’t have that force anywhere. So now we kind of play on the perimeter, and sometimes it works out a little bit, but that’s not what we need to do.”

More rolling, less jumpshots is probably the best thing I've heard thus far from MDA.

According to Gasol, D'antoni has wanted him doing this as far back as pre-season and gave the philosophy that we have 'enough shooters' that Gasol doesn't have to spend time on the perimeter so much.

I think what D'antoni wants is Gasol posting up and Kaman taking those pick and pop mid range shots.  But ultimately wants to run the offense through Gasol to open games for passing and scoring in the post.

If Gasol never posts up it never happens.   Maybe this will help as Gasol IS a great pick and roller but he needs to ROLL more.

At the end of every practice I am always hoping to hear that Kobe participated for the first time. I can't wait for that. Until then I won't get too excited about hearing D'Antoni talk about taking less perimeter shots until I see it in a game.

It's up to the players to execute and up to Gasol to back down the scary 6 foot 7 power forward that blocked his shot.

Maybe this will help as Gasol IS a great pick and roller but he needs to ROLL more.

Gasol needs to pull the pacifier out of his mouth and get on with it already.

Yet Pau is content with taking those jumpers in the game.

Yep...and D'antoni gave him the freedom to do what he wants.  If Pau is pick and popping it's because he wants to.

You can't force a player to give effort. Gasol hasn't givin a flying eff for multiple seasons now

^ True & for some reason I just laughed as I read that.

Gasol needs to play with more consistency and intensity.

He's dealing with a serious illness right now. Give him a break.

Yet Pau is content with taking those jumpers in the game.

I love that Stu also hasn't been afraid to voice his displeasure with this numerous times now as well.

yo.

D'antoni can preach defense, effort, offensive fluidity, etc all he wants. In the end, it's up to the team to implement and execute it all.
