“We don’t really have point guards in the NBA now. We really have (shooting) guards – and that’s a fact,” Payton said. “I think there’s only three true point guards that play like point guards. I think Chris Paul is one, I think (Rajon) Rondo is one, and I think Tony Parker is the other.”

Hard to tell without context, but by reading it seems like even he had a hard time coming up with the names. There are some cases you can argue for, but going forward I am most intrigued by Lillard and a healthy Rubio.

You can't definitively say what makes a true PG, some people argue Magic was not a prototype PG like Stockton because of his size and all around game, while Stockton was a pure 'pass first shooter' which I find absurd. Payton himself wasn't necessarily a pass first PG either, I remember him leaning more towards the offensive side with his post game and driving. Plus he will always be regarded as one of the best defensive guards of all time, that is his biggest legacy.

Iverson was a SG, but then when you get to maybe Kevin Johnson, Kidd, or even Nash. All had distinct styles, but weren't always pass first mentality. Leadership and control accounts for alot, most here would agree players like Miller and Fisher have those floor like leadership abilities.

The criticism comes from players that would rather score than actually set up plays, Westbrook and Curry come to mind, while the argument for a player like Rose can be that he doesn't have enough offense to pass to and has to pick up the slack, which I kind of agree with.

If he's talking about pass first guards, you have to include Nash in the list.

yea but hes out of his prime and is old news. He isn't on the level of TP, Cp3 and Rondo right now

Agreed. But I'd say he's still a "real" PG, if Payton's talking pass guards.

Rondo is injured, so I'll say he's far above him.
