Well... Looks like we're not getting Beasley.

Mike Trudell @LakersReporter about 5 minutes ago

Mitch Kupchak announced that LAL signed forward Shawne Williams. W/good size (6-9), he shot 40.1% from 3 for D'Antoni in NYK in 2010-11.

it's a camp signing.  The only guy that is an official signing as in will probably play for the team is Elias Harris who got a two year.

Anyone else they "sign" is brought in for training camp and is likely to be cut before the 'deadline' of the contract becoming official.

The Lakers are expected to bring in 19 players to camp.

Thus far our camp invite signies

Marcus Landry
Elias Harris(has a 2 year so he's on the team I figure)
Shawne Williams

Nothing we didn't know before.  Williams just took longer to be signed but we knew pretty much as far back as 2 months ago that he was gonna be signed and brought into camp.

The Lakers are going to be likely bringing in 19+ people to camp.

Good for Williams.  But he won't make the team.

It means nothing in terms of us going after Beasley or not though.

For the record, WIlliams is 27 and the best basketball he ever played in his career was in.. you guessed it.. D'antoni's system and also has his bouts with marijuana problems.   Particularly after his brother's murder.

Are you sure? It seems to me as if they signed him onto the official roster. I'm not positive though.

it's a camp signing most likely as in they can cut him.

They've "signed" Marcus Landry too.

Same reasons.

They still have to make the team.

The only guy that was an official "you made the team" signing is Elias Harris, who got a 2 year contract and Sacre who has a 3 year one.

But Landry and Williams still have to make the team and get through all of camp.

But didn't those specifically state something of the sort that they signed them for training camp?

I'm not sure, it's just there's a lot more news sites exclaiming "Lakers Sign Free Agent Shawne Williams."

I've heard Shawne Williams can play defense. And that's something the Lakers desperately need.

they did outright say they signed Marcus Landry

http://www.sbnation....s-lakers-knicks

Just like they outright said they signed Malcolm Thomas and Gerald Green

http://www.nba.com/l...een_thomas.html

Something of note

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Gerald Green, and forward Malcolm Thomas, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not released.

Sound familiar?

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent forward Shawne Williams, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.

When Young and Johnson were signed, it said vets min, one year, two years etc.  When Harris was signed it was a two year  when Sacre was signed it was a three year.

When Landry and Williams are 'signed', the "details" of what kind of contract it was isn't released.   Pretty much a camp contract which he has to make the team on.

If it was an official "you made the team" signing it  would have said "Lakers sign free agent Shawne Williams on a one year deal with the veterans minimum" etc.

But aside from dunking on Dwight and briefly leading the league in 3 point shooting here you go some highlight someone made for Williams

Customary Shawne Williams NBA highlight when in D'antoni's system GO!

Enjoy it.

2:40 are some of his defensive highlights a well.

Yes he does try to play defense.

What positives do I see if the guy makes the team....

um....

He's 27 and athletic

He tries to play defense and doesn't get lost on speedy point guards easily(ask Westbrook)

He can pretty much do the things we'd ask Clark to do and is probably a better three point shooter.

Was once crazy enough to get into Metta's face.

He FIGHTS for rebounds.

Has a never back down attitude.

Could play the tough guy role.

Can stretch the floor.

Is ACTUALLY the size of a 3 at 6'9.

In D'antoni's system he went the month of December shooting 63% from three(yes 63%)  and in the following month shot 44% from 3 in January.

Unfortunately the next season when on the Nets he broke his foot and was out for the season and no team picked him up for the following season.

Would I be MAD if Shawne Williams made the team?

No, and I won't be a negative nancy if he did.  It's the one system he seemed to excel in.

He seems to be the forgotten man after a breakout season on the Knicks.

So we'll see what happens with that.

Hopefully he is a diamond in the rough. I'm greedy though. I'd still like to see Beasley and Tyrus on the squad. We can move some things around to make it happen

In all honesty we have two spots open(if I'm counting Kelly who hasn't signed yet)

so you could get both Beasley AND Williams if you wanted to.

Tyrus is done sadly.
