Howard wanted the Lakers to amnesty or "muzzle" Kobe, didn't want to play with him for 2-3 more years

Ric Bucher

Talks with various people close to the situation make it clear there were two prerequisites for Dwight Howard to remain a Laker: fire Mike D'Antoni and amnesty, or at the very least muzzle, Kobe Bryant.

As audacious as that might sound, it doesn't come without precedent in Lakers' history. When Kobe re-upped in 2004, it coincided with Shaq being shipped to Miami and Phil Jackson being let go. Of course, Kobe didn't have to pressure the team braintrust -- Mitch Kupchak and Jerry and Jim Buss -- to make those moves, since Dr. Buss, in particular, was done with both Shaq and Phil at the time. The Lakers apparently asked Dwight to be patient on both fronts for at least another season, telling him "hey, you're going to have to gut this out another year," a source said, although it sounds as if VP of basketball ops Jim Buss isn't ready to abandon Kobe anytime soon.

"Dwight didn't want to play with Kobe for 2-3 more years," Buss said. "I'm going to stand behind Kobe because of his history with the franchise." It would seem, then, with all that happened, the Lakers had the wherewithal to keep Howard if they had desired; they simply found the price too high.

"Muzzle" Kobe.....

"Muzzle" KOBE??????

"MUZZLE" KOBE!?!?!?!?!

What!?!? like control Kobe so that he doesn't dig into you when you screw up or push you to be better?!?!?!?

Tell Kobe "hey Kobe.. take it easy on Dwight.. he's sensitive.."

What the heck was he thinking!?

That term 'muzzle', if anything all the criticism making Kobe look like the villain. You had a usurper trying to remove the King from his throne....

Kudos to Jim for sticking up for the franchise player we all love. This guy gets more hate than love.

And through it all, Kobe doesn't care what Howard has to say about him.

While sooner or later, Howard/Harden could be the plug for a lot of locker room gossip in the NBA, since Harden basically wanted to be the primary option in Houston.

That's not saying the two won't work out in Houston, because strictly on talent + an offense that will likely cater to both, they should be okay to compete...but if all of this is true about Dwight, you'll see some friction with the Beard, eventually.

So many people in my generation act like they deserve everything with no hard work and are sensitive beyond belief

Well, good for Jim Buss.  Didn't think I would say that anytime soon.  Dwight wants everything handed to him without having to work for it. The new Lakers might not be as good as Dwight, but at least they won't be as entitled and disconnected from reality.

Lol. Harden and Dwight both think they are already winners. They have money, fame, nice stats. That's enough for them. I knew Westbrook was the heart of that Finals team.

Harden, Parsons, Dwight, Lin, Asik, Beverly, and a majority of the Houston team are very young and in my opinion have little to no leadership aside from Coach McHale.  With that being said things will either be stable and workout smoothly (highly not).  Or huge issues in roles such as stars, leaders, and other aspects in relation to the structure and dynamic of the team will ensue because for sure Harden won't hand over the team to Dwight and we obviously know Dwight's perspective and way of handling these situations...

This is a highly cathartic and rehabilitating moment for L.A. fans.

That deep breath you took at the end of the article when Bucher writes of buss, "I'm going to stand behind Kobe," is the best thing Jimmy could have ever said in an obvious manner to soothe or at least ease the minds of fans.

But is this also a stroke of genuis from Jeanie? Why is this article getting in the news? The Lakers are not typically a franchise known to have leaks of matter as sensitive as this certainly was.

Dwight is a joke of a player. One of the things about the Lakers purple and gold is.. they are loyal..and they WILL pay you handsomely for helping them win chips... you gotta respect the hierarchy..cause if ya dont.. gtfo L.A, and move to the target list.

Good job by Jim Buss. Keep the greatest Laker and let the other player walk.

I mean COULD they honestly?

It's like muzzle Kobe at "least".

Should have known when Dwight said earlier in the season after shunning free throw tips from STEVE NASH "I just gotta stop listening to everyone else and do me etc etc etc"

when he said that.. should have known he sure as heck wasn't gonna listen to Kobe.

if you refuse free throw advice from Steve Nash and just wanna do your own thing... there's no helping you.

Much as I can't stand LeBron I give him credit for asking Ray Allen to help him with his free throw shooting.  Why?  Cause he wants to win.

Dwight shunned free throw lessons from Steve Nash cause he doesn't care if he wins or loses he only cares about doing his own thing and fully enjoying himself doing it.    So if HIS WAY can't lead him to a championship he can say "well I had fun and did all I could"   No... you did all you WANTED... not what was necessary.  Big difference.
