Nick Young: 'Pride factor is going to kick in'

LOS ANGELES – Nick Young wasn’t very happy when he heard where the Los Angeles Lakers were ranked in ESPN’s Summer Forecast.

“We’re ranked 12th in the league?” he said, slightly puzzled.

Well, not exactly, more like 12th in the West, right behind the New Orleans Pelicans to be exact.

“What? No! Out of teams in the West?” he said, now more upset than puzzled.

“That’s very disappointing,” Young said. “I’m upset just hearing that right now. We’ll see what happens. We’ll see what happens this season. We’re going to be ranked higher than that by the end of the season.”

Young, who grew up in Los Angeles and played at Cleveland High in Reseda, Calif. and at USC, is no stranger to having people doubt him but didn’t think that would be the case after joining Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Steve Nash with the Lakers.

“I’ve been the underdog for so long,” Young said. “I’m upset and ready for the season. How are you going to be ranked that low with Kobe and Pau and Nash? There’s always going to be haters and we just have to keep proving them wrong.”

Also had some words for Clipper Deandre Jordan

“I told D.J. to be ready opening night,” Young said.

Nick sounds like he's gonna play with a chip on his shoulder this season especially after hearing that ESPN rating. Then was at the workout facility today getting in extra hours with Wes Johnson.

Good signs.

Glad to hear that. I'm really excited about this team. I don't have much high expectations, but watching them play will be a blast.

With all due respect, he has the right to post what he wants. Whether it seems like realism or a negative statement. The only way you can convince him that he's wrong is through facts and logic. And given the team's current state, there isn't much you can present that would be positive and favorable towards the Lakers.

He didn't even jump to contest that dunk, and everyone eventually gets dunked on. That means nothing...

Then Harry's comment should mean nothing to you as well. ^^

Hey, we're all Laker fans in the end. Some people are more optimistic than others. Some only make a statement on what facts are presented in front of them. Whether that seems like it's negative is just an opinion. Don't let it bother you. :)

This recent trend by Harry & Jody Bros are honestly annoying. My two cents.

On topic, I'm glad Young is feeling this way. Kobe must have liked him already.

Good to hear young wants to prove a lot of people wrong. Hopefully not just him but from everyone else as well.

Don't jump on the Young train if he has a great season, because you didn't even give him a chance from the start.

He ain't the only one, a lot of our young guys have sounded off recently

Wesley Johnson (referring to if he's happy about the new ESPN rankings)

Jordan Hill

Damn dey said that?!??

Ranked 12th?!? In the west?!?

Another from Young

GTFOH 12th that's crazy talk

You see... when you have a team as talented as we are in terms of potential, the worst thing you could do is motivate them to work even harder to prove you wrong and come into the season with a chip on their shoulder.

Last year when everyone was kissing our butt before the season even started a lot of our players came into last season(except Kobe, Metta and Nash) expecting to be carried to a championship.

The thing is, we played like it.   Maybe even Dwight's demeanor of non urgency in the locker room of "everything will be alright, rome wasn't built in a day. Let's try ti prank Kobe during the intro's" had something to do with that too.

This season however you got a lot of talent coming in with something to prove already, but then getting ranked 12th in the west seems to have fueled them even more.   They aren't coming out this year expected to win a championship, they are coming out with something to prove.   All those "big efforts" everyone saved for the Lakers, maybe MAYBE we'll see the Lakers playing that way instead, cause everyone's counting them out.  You got Nick Young with something to prove, Wesley Johnson with something to prove, Jordan Hill pissed off, Pau Gasol doing 3 a days and being fully dedicated, Nash is Nash and Kobe is Kobe  but the guys we need to step up this year are those young guys we brought in, Hill, Young and Johnson, we need big seasons from them.

So if those three start the season wit ha chip on their shoulder and can actually get on the same wavelength with Kobe(like that 09 team did after the Celtics humiliated them) we may do some damage.

Not saying we'll make a run at a championship, but we'll do some damage, the damage not a lot of people expect from us.   We're probably one of the deepest teams in the league and in terms of "potential" and bench and the ceiling of that is pretty good, the problem is a lot of our talent(Johnson, Young) had the tendency to be half and half or not at all sometimes.  If they come in with a chip, then I would hope we get the best out of them.   We play with a chip on our shoulder this year, then I think we can be the 5th or 6th seed depending on how other teams are looking.     The reason I don't go higher is because I expect the top 4 teams in the league to be.  OKC, SA, LAC, GSW in no particular order.   Lakers can be right there if we play with a chip on our shoulders this year.

Above everything else I want to see three things.

I want to see

Good to Great Health from everyone on our roster(a healthy season)

And if we're playing well I want to see CONSISTENCY.

And the third thing I want to see is EFFORT every single night.

HEALTH

CONSISTENCY

EFFORT

We give those three things, this team is talented enough to win 45 games.  Anything above that comes down to those 3 things.

Nick Young was pretty reserved in saying we will finish above 12th in the west. Even if we get tossed out of the rankings in the season, I want bolder statements from the players.

Hopefully they prove them wrong. I guess the new guys didn't get the memo that this team is...in a bit of a transition phase, to put it nicely lol.
