It's ultimately up to the front office to execute the politic decisions when it comes to a success of a team. Recently we've seen Jim's pride get in the way of his mental reasoning as he refused to sign Phil. Not signing Phil wasn't as bad as the way he dealt with the situation. Giving him Monday to decide but signing D'antoni before that without confirming their final decision with Phil? That's pride > precise judgment.
However, as Dave stated, Jim's "era won't mean anything if he doesn't hoist up that Larry O'Brian trophy." With that in mind, I believe Jim will take the opinions of the others in the front office and come up with better results. The Los Angeles Lakers brand and history will of course assist him as well with the potential to attract marquee free agents and ultimately win a championship.

"Bryant had come to rage against the idea that Howard's clownish disposition could overtake the locker room, the Lakers' culture, and had warned Howard that he would never, ever let it happen."
