Lakers News: Kurt Rambis Wants To Make Lakers A Top Defensive Team

USATSI_6628180_154224518_lowres-300x220.

Last week the Lakers hired Kurt Rambis to become a part of the coaching staff. Rambis spent many years as an assistant under Phil Jackson and his main focus was on the defensive end of the floor. In an interview with Eric Pincus, Rambis spoke about the challenge of turning the Lakers into a top defensive team.

“That’s going to be our challenge, is to make it a good defensive team,” said Rambis.  “Even if you had Metta and you had Dwight on your team, you saw from last year … it still doesn’t mean the defense is any good, just because you’ve got a couple of good defensive guys out there.  It all comes down to five guys who are willing to make those sacrifices.”

Not only did Rambis lose two former defensive players of the year, but he lost two guys who showed up on all of the Lakers best defensive five-man rotations.

Of the Lakers Top 10 five-man defensive rotations, either Metta World Peace or Dwight Howard were a part of eight of them and six of the top 10 — including the top three — featured both World Peace and Howard.

It’s not a secret, Rambis is going to have his work cut out for him as the Lakers exercised a plethora of bad habits on the defensive end — and were subject to flaws that weren’t correctable.

Rambis should get a Nobel Prize if he turns this group into a top defensive team.

To be fair to Rambis what else was he supposed to say "We would be terrible in defense this year" ?

Anyway with no premier defenders and the bunch of colorful characters assembled - we should be happy if we are better than #25

You mean to tell me I can't have that threesome with Monica Bellucci and Salma Hayek?

that mindset might not make them the top.. but it will def. make them a better defensive team than they were before. At least they have goals this year defensively. IM not worried about the offense for this team... its the defense and they need team defense to make any upsets against the top teams like the heat or spurs

Our defense will be atrocious, we lost MWP and Dwight muthaflippin' Howard. Doesn't matter how much time and emphasis they put on it we will suck defensively.

Exactly how is a roster of Nash, Kobe, Pau, Young, Kaman, and a bunch of scrubs going to slow anyone down?

some people act like once you suck at defense..you ALWAYS will

you don't NEED to be the top to be good, with the right coaches in place...minus d'antoni but if he at least gives enough control to the assistants to get a defense rolling then they can at least be formidable to an extent
