Two world championships seem to have healed some wounds for fans of LeBron James.

For the first time in four years, the Miami Heat forward is the most popular player in the NBA, according to the latest ESPN Sports Poll.

Nearly 13 percent (12.9) of NBA fans said James was their favorite player this season, allowing him to best Kobe Bryant (12.5) for the first time since the 2008-09 season. That was the only other season when James passed the Los Angeles Lakers star, the top pick by fans for five of six years from 2006-07 to 2011-12.

But James became easier to love, thanks in part to his play on the court, which led to two titles and two Finals MVP awards. While casual fans of the league still didn't like him as much as they did at the height of his Cleveland days, the most recent ESPN Sports Poll shows that more avid NBA fans (18.9 percent) call James their favorite today than at any other point in his career.

The numbers show that James separated himself from Bryant thanks to greater support of the African-American population. Twenty-four percent of African-Americans said James was their favorite player this season compared to only 16 percent mentioning Bryant. James also skewed younger, as 18 percent of kids 12-17 said they preferred him while only 15 percent preferred Bryant.

What does popularity mean anymore? Not too much. Kobe is going to keep doing his thing regardless of how popular the media says he is. In fact, it may fuel him up to work even harder...

Globally, Kobe is BY FAR the most popular active basketball player and it's not even close. ESPN polls = North America

The guys that are complaining about it coming from espn do realize that it came from espn last year, and the year before that, etc right? So why complain about it now? Because Kobe didn't win?

Im confused how Kobe was more popular than james in the first place. Everyone I seem to talk to loves Lebron, and I never see Kobe get any love other than when I talk to other Laker fans. Just odd I suppose. From my experiences I would have said Lebron passed Kobe in terms of popularity years ago in the states.

makes sense though...being that these are NBA fans voting, and based on the fact that there were always more laker fans across than country overall than heat fans...i guess kobe does win that battle...now that lebron really has the monkey off his back (thanks ray allen!) people are hopping on the heat bandwagon faster than they're jumping off the laker one...so now bron bron wins\

i wonder if kobe had won it again, would everyone would be talking about how awesome it was instead of downplaying it...

its funny to think what would have happened if Ray Allen would have missed that 3 in game 6.

would of changed A LOT.

ESPN needs its posterboys in the spotlight, out with the old, in with the new. In a few years ESPN will hardly even mention Lebron.

This is a misleading facts.  Maybe Lebron is more popular in the states but around the world, Kobe is still the bigger draw and more popular.  Lebron needs a few more years of marketing and face time for some third world country to realized who he is. And he also need more than just 2 championships.  If you don't believe me, travel to other countries because I did. They recognized Kobe and like kobe more than Lebron. The Lakers brand is still huge outside of the states.   Kobe owns China and how many people live in china? Yea case close,

Kobe > Lebron

MDA is an offensive genius. I hope he sticks to his guns and keeps doing what he does best: Run and Gun. That's the only way to coach.
