I would like to see who people think are the greatest defenders ever.

Who is in your top 5 perimeter defenders?

And Who is in your top 5 for greatest big man defenders ( defensive anchors I guess you would say)?

Top 5 perimeter defenders for me:

1. Jordan

2.Pippen

3. Payton

4.Dennis Johnson

5. Joe Dumars

Top 5 big man defenders for me:

1. Hakeem

2. Ben Wallace

3.Bill Russel (never say him play, just from what I have heard about him)

4.Mutombo

5. ?( not sure)

Like to see what everyone else post because I don't know too much about the older generation players.

Jordan, Pippen, Payton, Moncrief, Walt Frazier

Top 5 big men defenders (in no order)

Olajuwon, Russell, Nate Thurmond, Mutombo, Ben Wallace

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.

Perimeter in no order I will say Jordan, Pippen, Payton, Stockton, and Cooper.

I am sure I am leaving others out, but still I have seen many playoff games of them and clips to actually make an educated guess. Moncrief and Bird also deserve great notice.

Top 5 bigs in actual order. I actually list players as center's.

1. Hakeem

2. Russell

3. Wallace

4. Robinson

5. Mutombo

As well a tough pair to leave out for me were Kareem and Mourning (especially looking at his game and stats early in his career).

I think players like Rodman and Duncan can't be placed in general bigs categories given the prowess of Forwards.

A little busy right now, so I'll go more into detail later...but Dennis Rodman is the greatest defensive player of all-time.

yes but it's close.  But no one has ever EVER defended Larry Bird the way Cooper was able to.   I think Bird once said that Cooper was the greatest defender he ever faced.

Agreed on that point. Looking at the numbers (especially his rebounding averages) and the way he stopped guys much bigger and stronger than him, I would have to give it to him. People often forget his defense in the pistons era as well when he was in his prime. With all the all defensive selections and DPOY awards, Rodman definitely is the GOAT defensive player.

Yea I remember hearing that too but Bird never had a prime Jordan or Pippen defending him so I wonder if he would rank them higher.

Dennis Rodman could guard at any position excellently. Not only was he extremely physical and effective, but he would get inside superstars' heads and make them lose their rythem as the game progressed. Players got frustrated when guarded by him.

Lets just say if I had to pick one guy to guard "insert name of any player in the league, ever!" It would be Rodman

I would like to see a match with Kobe vs Rodman.

Damn that would be epic.

Another thing: I can't believe lakers are always in every discussions from centers to one of the best defensive players.
