Again a good signing at a very good price.

I think Wesley Johnson still have some upside, even though he's been struggling.

El Segundo – The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent forward Wesley Johnson, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.

“Wesley is a young, athletic player who runs the floor well and is an excellent defender,” said Kupchak. “He’s a developing player who we think could become a good NBA player for years to come. He’s also a great kid and we’re happy to add him to our team.”

Originally selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the fourth overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, Johnson has appeared in 194 career games (148 starts), averaging 7.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 23.1 minutes as a member of the Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns.

A three-year NBA veteran, Johnson averaged a career-high 9.0 points during his rookie season with Minnesota, ranking sixth among rookies in scoring and third in three-point accuracy (35.6 percent). In two seasons with the Timberwolves, Johnson averaged 7.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 24.6 minutes. Most recently, Johnson appeared in 50 games (21 starts) with the Phoenix Suns, averaging 8.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in 19.1 minutes.

Johnson spent his first two collegiate seasons at Iowa State (2006-08) before transferring to Syracuse, where he helped the Orange to a 30-5 record in 2009-10 and was named a First Team All-American. The 6-7 forward averaged 16.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists in his one season at Syracuse, being named Big East Player of the Year and a finalist for the Naismith, John Wooden and Oscar Robertson national player of the year awards.

Hes like a 6 foot 7 version of Shannon Brown...but has a much higher defensive potential though. Interesting pickup. Not sure if he fits D'Antoni's system. We'll see

shooting could be better but other than that he fits it very well. id be surprised if he doesnt up his percentages this season(it would be hard not to lol). going to phx helped him because the offense was more familiar to syr(as well as being at the 3 more). and dantoni should just the same depending on who else is on the floor.

all these moves have pretty much been mda guys(well kaman to a lesser extent)but then again more length youth and speed is wanted for any system.
Abdul-Jabbar told the San Francisco Chronicle last month he met Howard only once and that Howard expressed an interest in learning from the former Lakers captain but he never again reached out to Abdul-Jabbar.

‘He’s charming, he’s charismatic, very nice young man,’ Abdul-Jabbar said. ‘Maturity-wise, he doesn’t get it.’

Well he did close out the 2nd half of the season shooting 43% since all-star break and shot 46% all throughout April so I think it could go up.

One good thing about Wesley is he is the ultimate system player and rarely tries to go outside of the system to do too much and is selective about his shots.

So at least with him we won't see very many forced ill advised shots.   He picks his spots well so that's good ESPECIALLY when you have a point guard like Nash or Blake around you.

he's the same in NBA2k13 when I have the ball with Blake I can always count on finding him in a good situation or a good spot for a shot.

These moves make me think Mitch wasn't trying at all to lure these types of FAs in recent years.

he would have tried to get NY but probably not an unproven young guy like wes. they didnt have the luxery of gambling much or at all when trying to compete.

as a gm, you are either all in for now or all in for the future. the lakers wont tank and will always try to contend as much as possible but make no mistake cap space for 2014 was the goal. seeing as they are not a contender, they know this could be a time to get some needed youth and speed.

So far i think they have done a great job with finding guys that have potential to be better while being able to contribute now and make them at least somewhat competitive.

oh it probably will go up like i said but so far he is far from proven as a shooter. the wolves were a bad fit for him much like iowa was so comfort should help him. he does have pretty good form and will find his stride at some point.

he is definitely no black hole lol.

Why Wesley Johnson is a good pick-up:

Wesley Johnson came as the 4th pick in the ‘10 draft and so far haven’t lived up to the expectations. That doesn’t mean he won’t be able to find a role.

Bruce Bowen came into the league  in his mid-20s, didn’t do anything for a few seasons with different teams but then found his niche and from around his 30th birthday and the next 9 seasons he managed to turn himself into one of the most feared wing defenders in league history.

I’m not saying Johnson is going to turn into Bruce Bowen, even though he has the tools to become that type of player, but in a re-load season like this, a chance on Wesley Johnson is a very low risk, high reward move.

Good pick up.

We have lower expectations this year and a bunch of guys on our roster who are hungry. That may prove to be as potent as putting together a super team.
