This is what was reported at the time.

Mitch and Jim had two options, hire Phil with extra front office perks or D'Antoni who basically just wanted a job. They take these two options to a dying Jerry Buss on his hospital bed and ask him, "Hey, we can get Phil Jackson if we give up some control. Or get D'Antoni on the cheap." Buss's line of thought is that he can get himself the showtime basketball he's been craving and he feels uncomfortable with giving up control to Phil especially after their rocky relationship in the past. So he gives the go ahead on MDA and says [expletive] you Phil.

This doesn't mean Dr. Buss is to blame, he didn't exactly understand the situation. He wasn't a part of Lakers basketball for a while at that point, if you remember he wasn't even aware of the Dwight Howard trade until Jim told him it was done. The responsibility still lies on the Lakers front office. If they were smart, they would've realized D'Antoni was a bad fit with a marquee big man like Howard and would have hired Phil without even really thinking too hard about it.

Jim's issues with phil stem largely from the rocky relationship between jerry and phil so this shouldn't be any surprise to those who follow lakers basketball. both jerry and jim made the decision. jerry has never been a huge fan of phil or his offense and only put aside those feelings because of the winning.

this doesn't absolve jim or jerry just like jerry wasn't free of blame for keeping del harris as long as he did and a host of other moves.

every owner makes mistakes. the only reason this is even a consistent issue is because Jeanie is bedding the guy who was robbed so it creates a family tension and split in the front office.

once d'antoni is fired and they get the right coach (whoever that is) this will blow over and the franchise will move forward.

jim treats the team like a fan, the same way his dad did. now he's not as smart as his father but a fan will run the team with emotion which jerry proved is the way to own a sports franchise. it allows you to be willing to have deep pockets and not be content with losing.

I think jim will fix the mistakes he's made, I think both he and mitch will devise a plan going forward. this is the same duo that traded pau and lamar for chris paul and huge cap space.

they made a deal that landed them an elite PG with enough cap space to sign Dwight howard outright in free agency. it was a genius move. it was why it pissed the NBA off. unlike the Houston trade for harden that still required that they dump cap. the lakers were going to have cap space to sign Dwight without doing anything

then to follow up the next year they actually trade for Dwight and steve nash while keeping their entire team

the front office isn't incompetent, they are human. they make mistakes, and I think they'll fix them
