China has developed a new supercomputer, which is twice as fast as US and Japanese systems, early tests show. The new Tianhe-2 (Milkyway-2) is said to be even speedier in theory, and is likely to top the world ranks for years.

The worldwide supercomputer race may again be led by China, and this time for good – even before the official tests, the Tianhe-2 is showing a stunning performance of 30.7 Petaflops (quadrillions of calculations) per second, while its closest US rival, the Titan, can boast only 17.6 Petaflops.

Once again we let China beat us. C'mon USA, stop lagging so much.

^ Lagging. I think that is the appropriate term to use in this case. ;)

Is the picture a drawing or a graphic? It looks fake.

It is a graphic that was designed by an artist who has apparently seen the system.

Can't wait for Quantum Computers

I know right? They are right around the corner.

Nothings really been developed though. There will probably be a plateau for a few years then someone will figure out new way to develop processors. Though Quantum will be a little while. I hear that they are having trouble with keeping it working cuz just a tiny vibration [expletive]s up the whole processor.  It may just be in the best interest for everyone to just skip quantum and go towards a whole new direction.

If you haven't heard of it, you should checkout Shor's algorithm for quantum factorization. They have already come a long way and have suggested that we may see personal quantum computing in less than a decade. There have been reports that Los Alamos National Labs have been operating on a quantum internet. A university also came up with parallel processing algorithms using recycled photons, published in this paper here. Interesting stuff.

Read about the network at Los Alamos, one of the places I woulda liked to work at haha
