Hey if a team can trade a head coach in the NBA, why can't a team amnesty a coach?  I need to write a letter to David Stern.  If he knows whats best of him, he needs to allow the Lakers to amnesty a coach.

Not sure if this was really more of a joke, but there's no point in amnestying a coach. When you amnesty a player, you still have to pay them their salary. It just doesn't go against the cap anymore now and if another team bids for him, they'll pay a portion of his salary for us.

You had to know he was going to.

He wasn't going to get that kind of money from anyone.  Why would he walk away from that lump of cash?

Not necessarily.  There's a gray area there.

It's really up to the team, or any agreement that was included in the current contract.

Now, would Ron have a medical retirement?  That changes things, because he'll continue to get paid, and it'll still be on our payroll (from my understanding).  But if he checks out as healthy, and he's just retiring because he's ready to go, then I doubt LA pays him that money.

Now part two, if the Lakers re-sign Clark and two other wings then they will probably amnesty Metta, if not he'll remain here.

Even if they dont re-sign clarkthey should not keep Metta.  Imagine slapping the fans in the face again by keeping MWP.  NOt only are they going to keep a coach the fans dont want, they will keep a player the fans dont want.

MDA is an offensive genius. I hope he sticks to his guns and keeps doing what he does best: Run and Gun. That's the only way to coach.

I could imagine that.

But then I'd imagine if we didn't resign Clark and some other wings us entering the season with no small forward and thus forcing Kobe to have to play there while giving Meeks starter minutes...

No thanks.  I'd rather keep Metta than force Kobe to be our main 3 and Meeks to be our main 2.

We should keep Metta unless we sign 2-3 more wings this off-season.   Otherwise losing him will be felt more than otherwise.

There are a lot of free agents ready to be picked up for cheap. I think almost any wing player is better than MWP right now.  Ron Artest was famous for only ONE thing and one thing only and thats great defense.   He doesn't even have that anymore.  Heck, his defense is only ok during his best day.  I don't see any use for him.  Why eat up the 7.7 into our cap when we can just save up and get cheaper players that can actually defend a little bit.

Like I said, we'll need a forward that's a floor spacer, and a defender, as well as with the ability to hustle and have tenacity but is also capable of playing starter minutes.

Once Metta's gone we'll need a starting capable small forward that can at least stretch the floor better and play palpable defense.

That's why I said we'd need to re-sign Clark, get Wright and get Brewer before amnestying Metta.

Its not that a guy like Ronny Brewer or Corey Brewer is BETTER than Ron.

Ron has some value in the right situation. But we are SLOW.

Pau is almost too slow but you can play Pau with Dwight and three shooters like Meeks ,Kobe and Nash.

With Pau,Ron,and Dwight, you would need Steph Curry and Harden to spread the floor and be a pretty good transition team.

We aren't built with athletic and quick shooters so Metta has to go.

Corey and Ronnie are miles ahead of mwp. He's in the bottom tier of starting forwards in the league. There's easily 30-35 better starting caliber forwards ahead of him. He can't guard ANYBODY. He's jump shooting is atrocious. Can't create for himself. Does nothing on the court well anymore but maybe get a steal or two once in a blue moon. Earl Clark is better than mwp. The lakers need a small foward is well rounded in every facet of the game. Obviously lebron in 2014 may not be a possibility. But if somehow they can get nick batum that would be amazing. Or an even turner.
