CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Kobe Bryant is in a court battle to try to keep his mother from auctioning off mementoes from his high school days in Pennsylvania and his early NBA career.

A southern New Jersey auction house is suing for the right to sell the stuff after the NBA star's lawyers wrote the firm to say it could not.

Bryant contends that his mother, Pamela Bryant, doesn't have the right to sell the collectibles including his Lower Merion High School letters, a 2000 NBA championship ring and hundreds of other items.

Berlin, N.J.-based Goldin Auctions says Bryant told his mother years ago that he didn't want the items.

Legal papers say Pamela Bryant intended to use her $450,000 advance to buy a new home.

Saying he doesn't want the items doesn't resolve in giving away the possessions. Shouldn't be a hard case to fight for Kobe.

And Kobe not wanting his 2000 championship ring? C'mon. He ain't losing that.

Yet another parent trying to capitalize off their famous child. Even if Kobe did give her these things, there's no way she comes out looking like a good parent.

These are personal things that should be forever kept in a locker, or passed down to Kobe's descendants, not something that should be auctioned. Kobe's mother should be proud to have these items from her son.

Maybe he won't give it to her? I don't know but why would she go to the lengths of selling her sons stuff to get money when her son and husband are pretty wealthy americans, like Windu said this situation is just embarrassing on both sides. I know Kobe had a rift with his parents when he first married Vanessa because they didn't approve...

ESPNLA has an article up on it with updated info. Seems like Kobe was helping out but his parents got greedy.

I'm on my phone so I can't look for the article at the moment, maybe someone can do that for me

I'm on mobile too, but here's a link to the updated article
http://m.espn.go.com...storyId=9238503

According to court filings, Pamela Bryant struck a deal in January with Goldin Auctions in Berlin, N.J., which earlier this year sold a rare Honus Wagner baseball card for a record $2.1 million.

She got $450,000 up front, which she intended to use for a new home in Nevada.

A source told ESPN that Kobe Bryant offered to pay his mother up $250,000 toward a home she wanted.

She refused, saying she wanted $450,000. When Kobe Bryant turned her down, the source said that unbeknownst to Kobe Bryant she struck a deal to get the $450,000 advanced through the auction company.

Seems like there's more to the story. Kobe has always spoken highly of his mother in interviews. When they first moved to LA he bought them all a nice house and he's bought Vanessa's parents really expensive homes worth millions of dollars. I'm not sure why he wouldn't just buy his mom a home that's not even that pricey in the context of California real estate.

Does anyone know the relationship Kobe has with his parents right now? I don't have a clue.

Kobe probably did tell his mother that she could have them, but I'm sure he didn't think she would sell them at any point.

This is the part that makes the parents look really bad:

Sources close to Kobe Bryant confirmed to ESPNLosAngeles.com that before learning about the auction through news reports, the Lakers star has given his parents "millions of dollars in financial assistance" throughout his 17-year career.

Is this another situation of people not being able to manage their money correctly?
