Not just for gaming
But this could be useful for many things

How would you like to have a conversation with someone of the either side of the world sitting together in the same virtual reality room

Enjoy a date with your significant other?

The applications of this are limitless

Very true. It could even be useful as an educational tool -- imagine how much cooler learning about American history would have been if it were taught in a VR where things could be illustrated firsthand!

Or how about re-watching a Laker game in a VR at Staples? 3D sound in pair with this is going to kill!

Wow
History in 3d!

Being at the battle of Gettysburg
Or walking around colonial Jamestown in 1610
Or storming the beaches at normandy

This will totally rewrite the rules on everything

Apparently the entertainment company Zenimax are saying that Oculus stole the technology for the VR from them. Pretty crazy if it is true.

All I want for Christmas is a Laker girl :D

There is the Cyberith Virtualizer, which I posted earlier up, that straps a person into a device that prevents the person from moving, but allows them to walk or run their legs on the gamepad below them. The best way to describe it is a treadmill in 360 degrees.

It's not the most efficient, but improvements will come over time. My prediction is that we will eventually be able to move in these virtual realms just by thinking it, i.e. mind-controlled computing.

The idea behind Unity3D is bringing the operating system to the virtual reality stage. As you can see in the above video, we can now interact with objects using our hands and fingers. As this improves, Unity3D should allow for extremely immersive operating systems. We are talking about a new user interface that will make our current Windows and Mac interfaces look like Xerox.

Instead of having folders on your desktop, like "My Documents" and "My Pictures," you throw on your Oculus with Unity and then walk into your "desktop." You open up a filing cabinet drawer labeled "My Documents" or "My Pictures," and can physically interact with your files. As the software and hardware improves, you have a Minecrafteque scenario, but with your computer and information that is important to your life.

I'm not sure if Unity will be more efficient than Windows and Mac for quite some time. I think the attention will be toward the new user interface itself and the (positive) consequences that result from it. However, which is faster: double clicking on a folder and viewing a picture, or walking over to your virtual filing cabinet and viewing the object? The former is obviously more efficient, but the latter is definitely more immersive.

If the technology becomes popular, the efficiency and productivity of Unity (or similar projects) will surpass Windows and Mac. If we will eventually be able to move with our thoughts, then we will eventually be able to prompt the computer with commands based on our own thoughts. Now, which is faster: double clicking on a folder and viewing a picture, or thinking of the folder and picture you want to view?

There's gold and it's haunting and haunting; it's luring me on as of old; Yet it isn't the gold that I'm wanting So much as just finding the gold; It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder, It's the forest where silence has lease; It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder, It's the stillness that fills me with peace.
