Forget 2014 for now! I know the Lakers are looking ahead for the 2014 FA class and are hoping to sign an elite Free Agent, but I really think we may end up in a bad spot. The only way we have a chance at signing an elite Free Agent is if we have either Howard or similar top-tier player already signed long-term. If that’s not the case, I think we end up using the max on the wrong guy and limit our options for a long time like the Knicks did with Amaré and Nets did on Deron and Joe Johnson (I know it was Atlanta who signed him, but Brooklyn is stuck with him).

I think we need to do whatever possible to re-sign Howard and in case he leans towards signing elsewhere we should attempt to move him for another elite player, like Kevin Love, CP3, Griffin etc. – getting Omer Asik in a sign-and-trade wouldn’t be bad, but probably isn’t going to cut it when it comes to winning championships in 2014 or signing LBJ in 2014.

Couple things,

1) Howard would need to agree to a paycut by agreeing to a S&T. That's not happening unless he desperately wants to play on a team that can't sign him outright.

2) We can't receive any players in a S&T because we are over the cap, so what I said above is irrelevant.

Teams in the luxury tax can't sign and trade players.

I could see Nick Young willing to come here because of his roots to LA. Only problem is he doesn't help our defensive problems. If he replaces Meeks at SG off the bench, it is possible to say that we downgraded in the defense department because of Meeks' scrappiness.

I think Nick Young would be a decent pick-up and what he lacks in scrappiness he has in length. The problem is that it doesn't really solve the two main issues, which is perimeter defense and 3pt shooting.

I'd probably go for a specialists that solve our immediate needs, like Kyle Korver or Ronnie Brewer as well as speedy PGs.

I think a guy like Toney Douglas would be nice. That would never happen though, since MDA dislikes him.

Kroger is another old player that doesn't solve our defensive needs. Then again, who's the coach again? So all these players would help.. Smh...

As much as we need defenders, we also need a guy who can spread the floor. I think what Korver brings offensively outweighs what he lacks in defense.

But before we start complaining on the lack of defense from the 3pt shooting white guy - he isn't too bad:

He held opponents at both wing positions to a PER of 11, which is very solid, and he averaged 0,5 blk and about a steal per game - which is in the upper third of wingmen.

Offensively Atlanta was 6,6 points better with Korver ON the floor.

Defensively they were also better when he was ON the floor (-1,5 points).

Regardless, i think he re-signs with the Hawks.

nick young shot the same % from 3 as jodie meeks did this year. and it was a low year for young/meeks too.

i think our main issues are - defense/not enough guys who can create their own shot - way too much of the burden to create offense is on kobe! we need players who can shoot and create. like nick young

"The West aint close, now that the LAL got Dwight, who gon stop him on OKC!????" - Chris Webber (nba tv -August)

Big 4s are OVERRATED. you think Nash/Kobe/Dwight cant carry the whole Offensive load!?
(Peace Pau we need pieces, not MettaWorldPieces!!!!!!!!)

I think we need ONE player who can create for himself - a Jamal Crawford type, who can come off the bench and drop 20 on any given night.

Other than that, we need roleplayers. Defenders/shooters who can make things easier for Kobe, Nash, Pau and Dwight.

It doesn't even have to be that difficult either.

Sign LeAndro Barbosa for the vets minimum or perhaps Jordan Crawford - that's your scorer off the bench.

Sign Martell Webster, Kyle Korver or Dorrell Wright for the mini-midlevel. (Shooters)

Sign Dahntay Jones and/or Ronnie Brewer for the vets minimum. (Defenders)

Sign Toney Douglas or Delonte West for the vets minimum. (PG-defender)

If we could get just some of these guys, i think we'll be fine next season.

IF we're looking for a guy whos in the healthy Matt Barnes mold, James Johnson is your guy. He didn't play much in SAC last year but when we played them early in the year and in preseason Kobe had some trouble scoring on him. He has a team option of $3.5 mil i think SAC will probably let him be a free agent we could sign him for the mini MLE (or portion of it). 26 yrs old, 6'8 got a 7'1 wingspan. Not athletic like Ariza but very active, hustles and defends.

Career numbers as a starter: 26.5 mins, 9.5 points 4.5 rebs 2.2 assists 1.8 turnovers 1.1 steals, 1.2 blocks 46% FG 26% 3FG

His last full year was 2011/2012 with Toronto here are his defensive highlights

His offense is meh

He was the 16th pick in the 09 draft by the Bulls...maybe like Clark and Hill slow learning curve and hes finally ready to bust out?

For AM crowd: @LarryCoon says Brewer, Daniels, Garcia & Delfino are possible #Lakers additions. #ESPNLANow discuss: http://es.pn/RfXDFW

Brewer can D up and hustle but streaky shooter. Daniels is old/injured. Garcia is legit. And Delfino just had the same injury as Yao so hes gonna be out for a while.

I don't want Daniels.  He's garbage.

Brewer, yes. Garcia, yes.

Although Brewer would command our entire mini-MLE, that would be a bargain for a starting SF, although i don't know if he'll take it.

If you want young and athletic Josh Selby, Darius Johnson Odom, Chris Wright sf that would be the way to go.

Ronnie Brewer.. I dig that if it were go happen.
Shelby had said before the draft that he,wanted to drafted by the Lakers. I like what he,was doing at Kansas. I would not mind those two and possibly an extra big just incase Baby Joker is let go and Dwight it Pau have an injury

Ronnie Brewer is a terrible shooter.  Very terrible, but he can play D and is athletic, he's an upgrade over what Eyenga would have been.

Garcia is Barnes 2.0.

Delfino's shooting is similar to Metta's and he is coming off injury, don't think he makes the team. But he is an upgrade over Jamison in terms of trying on defense.

Daniels... don't think he has much left.

Go after Webster above all else but I wouldn't mind Garcia or brewer with that.

I've always liked Steve Blake.
