Lakers and Kobe both think its a complete tear.

Beckham came back from a complete tear 6 months later(actually 5) to play pro soccer again.

So even if it's a complete tear it could be a six month recovery depending. 6-8 is my guess.

If he's out for 65-70%, or more, of next season, then I think you have to. 30 million is just too much, and is too crippling on the payroll as far as building a team. If he would come back for the last 30% of the season, I don't think he would be THE difference between a team winning the championship or not. I also think we should trade Pau and his 20 million dollar contract - Only way to build a contender once again, and to stock our team with the necessary depth, youth, talent, etc. that is needed to do so.

We are going to have to pay him to matter what. The only difference is that if we amnesty him, it won't go against our cap. Kobe is the reason why the Lakers make money. If you think he is huge here, then you haven't seen him in Asia. They greet him as if he were a god. This would be a huge PR blow if we amnesty him.

GUYS IF ITS A PARTIAL TEAR HES OUT FOR ONLY 6 months! DAMN Why would you amnesty someone who will be ready to go to start next season

Obviously, if this is only six months, then you don't amnesty the guy.

Just lay out facts and discuss if/then and either/or.

Some people are acting like the suggestion is to amnesty Kobe no matter what. No one feels that way. Kill the straw man.

Only break Lakers/Kobe catch here: Only one year left on his deal. When team amnesties player, can't re-sign him til that contract expires

If he's going to miss the year you can apply for the injury exception which will make Kobe's salary not count against the cap, and insurance pays 80%

In reading through these posts, it becomes increasingly clear that a large portion of you have no comprehension of what is being discussed here.

Kobe makes 30 million dollars next year no matter what,
Kobe is an unrestricted free agent in July 2014 no matter what.
Kobe can play for the Lakers in 2014-15 no matter what.

Meditate on those things before flying off the handle and accusing fans of not having loyalty. Nobody talking amnesty is saying we should do it if it means Kobe ends his career somewhere else.

Nope. If he is amnestied, he's going to follow MJ and go play for Washington.

Wouldn't be surprised if he went to the Bulls for less.

Bulls are only a scorer away from winning the title.

Not really time to close. This will be a hot topic until management says something, or we get into free agency in July.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak: Using the amnesty provision to waive Kobe Bryant in July was not even something being discussed.

Vitti said he'll be ready for season opener. That is all I need to know.

I pray its a partial tear, come on MRI results!!!

https://twitter.com/...969461567148033

First of all I would never quote a supposed medical student on Twitter to support a medical argument.

Kobe can tell if he has a completely torn Achilles. If you have no Achilles, you cannot plantar flex your foot at all. If you have some intact fibers (a partial tear) you can do that to some degree. When it's completely torn, the fibers ball up and retract in your calf, when it's partially torn it doesn't retract nearly as much (because the torn fibers are still attached to something). So yes, if Kobe thinks it's a complete tear and the trainers also think so, then it's essentially a complete tear.

Again, I don't think he will miss the whole season, but I think it's worth considering if further workup shows he has more injuries. It might be best for him to sit out a season and heal up everything, because if he starts favoring one leg he could further damage the others. Let's not forget he has pretty bad knees to begin with. And as for him playing for someone else, I don't think the Lakers do this without his agreeing.

I'm not sure what's better to use, the injury exception or amnesty. I think both would be similar in that Kobe would be able to play with the Lakers in 2014-15 but with the injury exception maybe they keep his Bird rights. I'm not sure what the Lakers would be willing to pay Kobe if he wants to come back at age 36. Hopefully he will be willing to play for the minimum, since he has made so much money, so that the Lakers can build for the future in free agency that season.
