thats the thing they dont know, only way to know is through the MRI. Kobes never had a serious injury like this so hes probably in shock. Just gotta hope for the best

There's always ways to know, just like you can tell if someone tore an ACL without an MRI.

When you look at the symptoms, Kobe has a complete tear, not a partial one. We'll just have to hope for the best.

SAS just went off on Jim Buss saying that Laker fans should be worried because Jimmy doesn't know what he's doing and he just wants to save money.

I'm reading all kinds of differnt things, couple of docs on Twitter said 6 months pointing to Beckham/Dominique then you have this...

http://www.cbssports...-journey-begins

An MRI on Saturday will show what Bryant expects to be a complete tear of the Achilles, and the most devoted, maniacal training specimen in modern sports will begin the long road back --the longest journey of his career.

The Hall of Famer who was driven in a golf cart to the Staples Center loading dock has one year left on his contract at $30 million and won't be able to play until at least Christmas, maybe the All-Star break -- maybe later.

I pray its a partial tear, come on MRI results!!!

I'm a medical student who tore his achilles last year. Partial vs complete tear is diagnosed by mri, not by symptoms,

and if you have surgery, timetable for recovery is very similar. kobe could in a walking boot as early as 4 weeks

If he's going to miss the year you can apply for the injury exception which will make Kobe's salary not count against the cap, and insurance pays 80%

I vote for yes, because it is what's best for the franchise. Of course they'll have to ask Kobe for his blessing.

Dude's being paid 30m to heal and sit for almost the entire season. Not to mention the 50m worth or luxury tax they could save.

Doubt teams will claim The injured Kobe off the waivers. It will cause an uproar.

How many months will it take for an amnestied player to return to his old team?

I believe the rule is an amnestied player cannot return to his team for the length of his contract.  The example I saw was Gilbert Arenas. He had 3 years left, so when he was amnestied, he couldn't return to the Magic in the next three seasons.

The only guy I worry about is Mark Cuban, he doesn't give a [expletive].

I would rather Kobe take a Jordan break. Retire, come back in 2 years

Gives us time to build around dwight and get some pieces

Let's him fully recover

Let's Dwight learn how to become a champion level player

Doesn't add more meaningless minutes to his body

The colts situation wouldn't have been the colts situation without Andrew luck available

Don't think we have Andrew luck(aka Kobe's replacement)

The organization has to pay up for this man. This man did unhumanly things for this organization just to keep it from being an embarrassment across the nba. Kobe saved jimmies ass WAY too many times. "Amnesty THAT!"

I guess people don't get 3 things.
A) Jerry West, Magic, and Kobe are MJ level. You don't amnesty that.
B)Lakers have a 2014 plan
In which only one contract is on the books, anything they do next year will be in line with that.
C) if you amnesty Kobe, u might as well guarantee that he will sign to one of our biggest rivals and make it Hell on the Lakers for years to come b

That what I meant when I said in a way.

Our superstar has been battling injuries and the front office has to decide whether they want to pay him that 30 million. In my mind, it doesn't make sense at all. No more what, your going to pay him. The only difference is that it doesn't go towards the salary cap, and it's not like we are going to sign a key free agent.

@ESPNSteinLine
NBA amnesty window ONLY July 1-9 this offseason. That's only time Lakers can amnesty anyone. And remember they'd forfeit Kobe's Bird Rights

@ESPNSteinLine
So amnestying Kobe only makes sense for both parties if Lakers are sure they'll have enough cap space to sign him back in summer of 2014

No chance they do it.  That's enough time to gauge where Kobe is at in his recovery.

The lakers would get more attention if Kobe were still on the team. Plus, I don't think that thread that says "Kobe's fourth on the jersey selling list" will be the same for a while. SO much Kobe gear will be bought, just like with drose. EVERYONE bought his [expletive]. I'm pretty sure the franchise gets commission on that.
