Don't forget though, IF he's out the whole season, Lakers are insured 80% of his contract.

So 80% of 30 million.

Stupidest post ever.

It's not.

Kobe could potentially missed the entire season next season.

And he's being paid 30m. Think about how much money they would save from the luxury tax

I know this sounds cruel, but it would be a lot of help to the franchise if Kobe is willing to accept being amnestied for the season, and return once he recovers from injury. If he doesn't want to, then I wouldn't mind either

HELL NO

His injury takes like 6 months to recover (Beckham, Dominique Wilkins are examples) if thats the case he should be back October/November

From what I am reading the typical recovery time is 6-12 weeks and you kids are frantically panicking about him missing the entire 2014 SEASON?

Right. And while that does soften the blow a bit, it does nothing to soften the salary cap, nor does it reduce the penalties or restrictions associated with being a tax payer.

Also, I wonder if they are eligible to collect the insurance if he's amnestied?

People overthink the actual dollars here and miss that this is really about trying to play within the rules. The Lakers spend big, folks. They have the highest payroll in the league.

Only way I could see Lakers amnesty Kobe's salary next year is with his blessing. Like if he knew he needed full year to recover

You need to slap yourself in the face.  You are just a kobe hater.  I rather have kobe on a gurney drbbling down the court than amnesty Kobe or have him play somewhere else.

MDA is an offensive genius. I hope he sticks to his guns and keeps doing what he does best: Run and Gun. That's the only way to coach.

...total recovery time will probably be as long as 6 months.

yeah, my fault on that. Still, he won't be missing next season.

No. If he is amnestied, other teams can make bids. But he could re-sign with the Lakers next summer.

If he played for another team, do you really think he would ever come back to the lakers?

the OP is asking a serious question. In fact the same topic is a featured story on the front page of yahoo.com.

http://www.sbnation....y-clause-lakers

Of course I vote a HELL NO!

But the article talks about a amnesty before resigning him in order to restructure, save millions and free up massive cap space. If KB agrees then I agree to.

While it's unlikely that it will happen, many teams would not bid on an injured Kobe. $30 million is a lot for an injured player.

The one man I worry about is Mark Cuban, he would love to make headlines and scoop up Kobe off the amnesty wire.

Kobe will be back next season so I don't see it happening, but then again, I don't know what Jim Buss is thinking right now.
