Kwame Harris played six seasons in the NFL.

Former San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Kwame Harris confirmed that he is gay in an exclusive interview with CNN and said he wished he would have come out while he was still playing.

"I want people, whether gay athletes, athletes still in the closet, or youths who are not sure what their sexuality is to know those are common feelings," Harris said. "Don't feel alone in having them."

Harris opened up about some of the challenges of being gay in the locker room and offered some support for future players who are unsure of their sexuality.

"You want to escape the despair and turmoil and your mind goes to dark places," Harris said of keeping his sexuality secret. "I'm happy today, and I'm glad they were just ideas and I didn't act on any of them."

"The cost was great (to) not speak candidly (and be) open about myself in complete manner," he added. "If I could have done it differently, I would have hoped I found the strength (to come out)."

Days before the Super Bowl, Harris was publicly outed after he reportedly was in an altercation with his former boyfriend. The topic drew a wide range of opinion, including a negative reaction from current 49er cornerback Chris Culliver.

"I don't do the gay guys man," Culliver said. "I don't do that. No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff. Nah…can't be…in the locker room man. Nah."

Culliver apologized for his comments and since has visited with a support organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

As a young kid and only in my mature teens now.  My perspective on homosexuality has changed tremendously.  From a religious stand point its obviously viewed as negative and not accepted, especially since I myself have grown up in a Catholic family.  Although honestly, if someones gay I don't see anything wrong with it and they shouldn't be treated any differently.

I think why homosexuality is so hated in sports is because it really is a manly sport and being gay is seen as quite feminine for gay guys. Also you are dealing with a lot of young guys really. Allot of people in sports are under 30 and allot are stil in there early 20's so of course you will have immature people.

Its really one thing to not approve of it but to flat out hate the people and treat them a bad people is sad.

If that's his choice, good for him on speaking up about his choice. Homosexuality/"gay rights" has been a religious issue. 1st amendment guarantees everyone the right to practice their religion without any government interference. Wicans, New Agers and Ancient Greek mythologies are accepting of homosexuality in their beliefs, to name a few.

I believe a child needs to be raised in a home with both a mother and a father, however. A mother can't be a father, and a father can't be a mother, as much as they wish to try. Let us look at the example of black fathers being replaced by a welfare check. Black on black violence SKYROCKETED because of a lack of father figure in the home. The only appeal to a father figure was usually a gang.
