And what was the strength of schedule during each of the periods you mention?  I would suggest that its alot more about who we played than whether Pau was in the lineup or not.

When pau plays we are 18-20

when he was out we were 18-15

Actually when he was out during that 20 game stretch we were 13-7. thats a .650 winning percentage.

So its there fore pau out means more wins. By quite a bit too.

And the defensive aspect well I really shouldn't even have to say anything for the matador defense.

Only the lakers fans look at Kobe-nash-Pau-DWIGHT-Jamison-Meeks and say " our front office didn't get Kobe enough talent"

Lol

Nash- 38 when acquired and clearly in decline, never played good D in his prime, for FOUR draft picks, one of which is not lottery protected.  The Suns are thanking us for the rebuilding contribution.

Dwight- bad back, no real expectation that he would be the Orlando Dwight this year, jury is still out long term

Jamison- always a good player on bad teams (except a year or so in Cleveland), plays bad D and is a straky offensive player even his his prime which was awhile ago now

Gasol- clearly past his prime, decline was rapid and obvious last year

Meeks- a 3p "specialist" that cant consistently make 3's

On paper, it looked like a good starting lineup with an exceedingly weak bench.  it turned out to be a starting lineup with holes and a weak bench.  So no, the FO did not really surround Kobe with an abundance of talent this year.
