Phil Jackson has become a trusted mentor to Dwight Howard.

"Phil, he texts me and he understands how it is to come off back surgery," Howard said. "He just said it takes a full year to recover, so you can't beat yourself up over the things that have happened this year."

Jackson recently told Sports Illustrated that Mike D'Antoni's system doesn't suit Howard's talents.

"Dwight just doesn't get any touches," Jackson said. "They've basically eliminated his assets."

This will be a story in the offseason.  Probably in Dwight demanding Phil be the head coach if he were to come and stay with the Lakers.

As this season is nearly dead. Mwpos is amnestied in the offseason, Trashtoni is fired, and PJ saves the day one last time.

Classy move, happy that PJ is still willing to reach out to players on the team that kinda jerked him around and chose an inferior coach over one of the greatest Laker coaches ever. (He may be the greatest Laker coach ever, but I still like Pat Riley. Tomato tomahto). Maybe he's feeling like coming back to get Kobe that Jordan ring....please Phil!

Nice! Hopefully Phil's encouragement and tips can help Howard out. Would love to see Dwight get more touches / be more effective

Phil's heart is in LA or Jeannie. Doesn't matter either way as long as he's mentoring Laker players.

But for those hoping Phil saves the day, he's not going to fix the current roster's slow perimeter defense that leaves Howard out to dry.

I hope Dwight makes D'Antoni's firing a necessary condition before he resigns. Then maybe the Lakers will do it right this time and get Phil.

Dwight will set the ultimatum in the off-season. Him or D'Antoni.

Of course, they'll choose Dwight (...I hope).

It gets interesting when Dwight says he only stays if Phil is coaching. Internally, he's going to ask for Phil. Whether we here about it or not, there's no doubt in my mind he will ask the front office to bring Phil back for him.
