we have same number of losses as utah, therefore if we theoretically both win out, doesn't utah beat us due to head-to-head tie breaker? so how do we have a magic number ?

Utah does have the tie breaker so that's an aspect many are ignoring.

We need to end with one less loss than the Jazz, no questions about it.

Not saying they have control of what spot they end up in, but I'd rather take my chances and stay in the 8th spot and play the Spurs in the first round.

If they get the 7th spot , they get OKC ... slim chance they get past them ...

The 6th spot they get the Clippers ... better chance than against OKC, but still like spurs matchup

^A Magic Number is based on WINS to Games remaining. Not Losses. Lakers have 2 more WINS than the Jazz. So even if the Jazz make up those 2 wins its a wash. The number is reletive to only the games the Lakers need to win. So long as we keep our lead ahead of them Utah's performance is irrelevant to the Magic Number. We control it.

Tonight is big for us

Jazz play Rockets

Warriors play Spurs.

No matter what happens we gain in the standings.

I say

Go Rockets

Go Spurs.

I want LA to be the #8 and SA to be #1.

The loss against Phoenix and Utah's win against Memphis really hurt. Looking at the remaining games for both teams i think it is going ot be very close.

We have:

vs. Was, @GS, @Min, @Mil (b2b), @Sac, vs. Dal, vs. Mem, @LAC, vs. NO, @Por (b2b), vs. GS, vs. SA, vs. Hou

We should be able to win 8 of 13, which lands us at 44-38, but we could easily go 5-8 instead - ending with 41-41.

They have:

@Hou, @SA, @Dal, vs. Phi (b2b), vs. Pho, @Por, vs. Bkl (b2b), vs. Por, vs. Den, vs. NO, @GS, vs. OKC, vs. Min, @Min, @Mem.

Utah's schedule is bad and they probably wont win more than 7, at best, which lands them at 41-41. They could also plummet and win only 4 against vs. Pho, vs Por, vs NO, vs. Min.

Regardless, any slump from either GS, Houston, LA and Utah could take them out of the playoffs.

i find it strange you guys are rooting to play the spurs, the team we should root to play are the clippers, who are a flawed play off team. the spurs are legit contenders, and they are so tough at home. Not saying the clippers aren't tough, but atleast we get 7 home games against them - huge advantage.

Probably cause the Lakers Achilles heel this season is young/athletic teams (Clipper, Denver, OKC) and the Clips beat the the Lakers by 10, 5, and 24 points this season already.

Doenst matter who we play. This season is still championship or bust to me. Meaning we have to go through several TOUGH teams and nothing is going to be easy. So may whatever come come and if were meant to win it all we will. Simple as that.

Laker fan for life.

You have predicted the future. Good job.

yea, last night was good to us. all went as hoped.

Magic # is : 11

Tonight no games are crucial but Go Bulls vs the Trailblazers.

We don't need Portland growing balls and getting back into the 8th seed race.

A loss would put them 5 games out and pretty much seal their fate unless something drastic occurs.

Friday is BIG again. every game is BIG though. But I like our chances to increase our 8th seed position.

Lakers vs Wizards - We should win. A rested Mamba and Pau off the bench.

Jazz @ Spurs - Go Spurs!

A Laker win and Jazz loss would put us 3.5 games up for 8th seed with 12 to play.

So Magic Number would be 9 in that scenario.

Celtics @ Mavs - Celts are in almost the same position as us so they need to win. This keeps Dallas from making a late move on us. So screw it, Ill say it Go Celtics!

Cavs @ Rockets - Not hoping for anything here. Rockets will handle business vs a weak team.

Last night was a gain.

AGAIN Lakers lost but Utah Lost to, thats as good as a win.

Thats a 2.5 game lead with 12 games to play.

Magic number went down a game.

Magic Number is now: 10

not as good as 9 if we would have won, but a win is a win......so to speak....lol

Both the Mavs and TrialBlazers won.

Due to our loss vs a Washington team we should have dominated its as I feared.

Mavs/TBlazers have grown balls and are right back in the 8th seed race.

A team's magic number is 83 (relative to every other team) when the season begins.
That is the combination of your teams wins and your opponents losses that are required to eliminate your opponent.

Simple example:

A team goes 82-0, then they eliminate/clinch against any team with only 1 loss. 82 + 1 = 83.

(Now clearly, since everyone plays each other, winning all 82 games would require that everyone else loses at least 1 game (more than that actually).

The Lakers have 36 wins.
The Jazz have 35 losses.
Total = 71; 83-71 = 12

The Lakers Magic number relative to the Jazz is 12.

If we win all 12 remaining games, then the Jazz can't catch us.
For every game we lose, the Jazz must also lose a game.

were 2.5 games ahead of the Jazz for the 8th seed.

Theres 12 games left to play.

We win 10 games and its mathematically impossible for them or anyone behind them to surpass us.

We would win the 8th seed by .5 games.
We need 10 wins in 12 games to lock it up.

Magic # is 10.

It is crystal clear that you don't understand the concept of a magic number.

You are focusing entirely on the number of GB and ignoring the scheduling discrepancy (I.e. the Lakers have played more games than the Jazz).

The Lakers are 36-34. If the Lakers win 10 games (your scenario), then they lose 2 (they have 12 games remaining 10 + 2 = 12),

Final record: 46-36

The Jazz currently have 35 losses (34-35).
If they win out (13-0), then they go 47-35, 1 game ahead of LA for the final play-off spot.

8. Jazz 47-35
9. Lakers 46-36 1 GB

This doesn't even consider that the Lakers must finish one game ahead of Utah due to the Jazz having the tie breaker.

The magic number is 12.

Before you respond again and tell me I am wrong, please really take the time to consider the basic math here.

There is no sense in debating this back and forth all day, especially if you are just going to keep putting misinformation out there.

OK....lol. It starts with the number of games remaining for the second place team, adds 1, then subtracts the difference in the wins between first and second place, or whichever positions you are trying to determine. Or:

 Magic # = G2 + 1 - ( W1 - W2 )

Give the lakers some credit. They are slightly less worse AND they are trying their best to make it close by losing.
