American socialism keeping japan players away? Lol the Japan players still are going to come bruh. MLB just doesn't want to pay team ridiculous amounts and puts more money in players pockets.

Any rule that makes it less likely for the best players to come to the MLB makes me sad...

Isn't it bad enough communism has kept generations of Cuban players from coming stateside?

Now American socialism is keeping away the Japan players...

Blah...
By trying to make an artificial even playing field, they have completely destroyed it...

I am very sad a out this.. I wanted to see this guy pitch in the MLB... And would have loved it for the dodgers to get him...

Now? How long before he comes over?

What are you talking about? This doesn't mean it's less likely.

I think you're confused on the what the bidding system is and how it works for Japanese players.  It actually benefits the players more so than ever. Before the bidding system had no restriction which led to smaller contracts for players.  For example, the Rangers posted a bid of $50 million just to NEGOTIATE with Yu Darvish.  They then gave him a 6-year, $ 60 million contract, who deserved more, but teams weren't going to give that because of the high posting fee.

Now teams can only post a maximum of $20 million and the result is Tanaka will get over $100 million on the contract he signs.   The posting fee goes to the team and the only team mad about it was Tanaka's team who voted against the fee, every other team in Japan agreed to it.

Another positive is that players can choose who they go to, so if the Dodgers, Angels, and Yankees all post the maximum bid, Tanaka gets to choose which team he wants to negotiate.  Before, whoever had the highest bid got to negotiate, player had no say so.

And he's being posted, by the way. He'll be playing in Major League's this upcoming season.

Other significant Tanaka news, today he choose Casey Close as his agent....

That's the agent of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke

So he's going to get PAID

At least $100 million.

I see him getting a deal around 6 years, $120 million.

Hopefully the Dodgers past success with Japanese pitchers and their West Coast location is enough to put them over the hump.  Obviously the money won't be an issue...

Just booked my hotel for Arizona in March.  Girlfriend got me Spring Training tickets for three games (Mariners, Giants, and A's)

How are they able to figure out an extension for Mattingly before Kershaw?

Our @ramonashelburne reporting that the Dodgers have reached an extension agreement with Don Mattingly; official announcement forthcoming.

Donnie Baseball's extension won't cost the team $200+ million, that's why...

I'm fine with extension.

Do I think the Dodgers can find a better manager? Sure, but at the same time, DM is still young in terms of experience and as long as he is willing to improve in the areas that he struggles with, then the Dodgers will be okay.  Players like him so there's no problem there.

Plus, if he doesn't do well with a contending team, he'll be gone before 2016, no doubt in my mind.

Some other Dodgers news today:

- Dodgers continue to talk to Kershaw about his extension.

- Alexander Guerrero is the leading candidate to start at second base.

- Matt Kemp is out of a boot and has started hitting, expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

- Dodgers also talking to Hanley about an extension

- Team looking to add a utility infielder

I read that Betancourt is on their radar.  They really need to get someone, going into the season with Dee Gordon & Scott Van Slyke as your only IF backups is a recipe for disaster.

They really should have tried harder to keep Punto or Ellis...

Dee Gordon and Scott van Slyke are 5,000,000,000 times better than anything Betancourt can bring to the table. Keep him away from the Dodgers please. Like being really serious here.

Dee Gordon "5 billion" times better?   please...

I'm not saying I'd like them to get Betancourt, only that I read they were looking at him.

And he provides decent glove at multiple positions plus good pop for an off the bench middle infielder.  He would be miles better than Gordon as the utility IFer off the bench, it's not even close...

Having Betancourt & SVS as the backup IFers is a much more tolerable scenario than having Gordon & SVS...
