BOSTON — Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni has and will not publicly advocate for the front office to make a roster change.
But with it remaining uncertain when Pau Gasol will return from a torn plantar fascia of his right foot, D’Antoni said he will meet with Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak fairly soon about the team’s personnel.
“We’ll get together in Miami probably and we’ll see how it goes,” D’Antoni said.
The Lakers play the Heat Sunday and are scheduled to practice in Miami on Saturday.
One of the first items of business could involve determining whether the Lakers would use the disabled players exception the NBA granted because of Jordan Hill’s season-ending left hip injury. Kupchak has publicly said he didn’t plan on using it because of Earl Clark’s emergence.
But the Lakers will find out sometime today how long Gasol will remain sidelined after he receives an examination from a team doctor and foot specialist.
“You hate it for him. he’s been playing really well,” D’Antoni said. “I don’t know how long he will be out. But it’s significant time. We dug ourselves in a hole and we’ll have to dig ourselves out without him. It’s not the best scenario. But it can be done. We’re going to do it.”
The Lakers can use the disabled players exception to sign a free agent for up to one season or acquire a player making up to $1.88 million through a trade. So don’t expect an firework acquisitions out of this. But from a pure numbers standpoint, it might be necessary for the Lakers to make a move with the exception.
The Lakers have also indicated they don’t plan on making any moves before the Feb. 21 trade deadline because it would add to the instability surrounding this season because of a coaching change, new roles and overlapping injuries. The Lakers also have a $100 million payroll and are paying an additional $30 million in luxury taxes.

I think depending on how we do tonight will be if we really need to get someone in FA. I still doubt we get anyone being that out top 2 choices are K-Mart and troy murphy. I really dont think either will do well. I know people want K-Mart so much be we have no idea if this guy is even in shape. He isnt playing he hasnt played for a while. He will not be who he was before. Not even close.

It would be funny if we got Oden and he returned as rejuvenated. After the Earl Clark surprise and this joke of a season, anything can happen lol.

Outside of NBA 2k has he ever been active on a roster?

I don't LOVE K-Mart but I think he can defend the interior.

I don't love Delonte West, but I think he can defend the perimeter.

I just think, these are 10-days we could at last try.

Use it to sign Martell Webster from the Wizards so we have a compotent backup 3 to add scoring to our bench.

Do that and you can live with not having Gasol. Martell would fill time at the 3 and be able to hit threes as well.

And he comes very cheap. Hill's exceptionm is enough to get him

You do realize that we need a big...

Why? Clark can play center and Dwight is playing tonight.

Id rather spend it on a 3 that is athletic can hit threes and hustle like Martell Webster that is better than Ebanks and could serve us more in the long run when Gasol returns.

Adding a 3 capable of giving us 10-15 on our bench who is also able to stretch the floor really would help our bench.

We aren't in desperate need of a bench center more so than a productive 3 for our bench.

When Gasol returns another big would be useless and get no play time. Whereas webster would take any possibility away from Ebanks and maybe he can be traded for picks.

Nash
Kobe
Metta
Clark
Dwight

Blake
Meeks
Webster
Jamison
Gasol

There you go.

Much more useful in the long run which is what Mitch would and should make a move on.

Ebanks adds nothing of significance.

MDA is trash. He can't coach and he continually allows metta world trash to go 2/99. By allow, I mean he doesn't bench him. He's not afraid to upset pau but MWT watch out. Time and time again Dantoni fails when there isn't room for more failure. This team is getting blown out, MDA can't get his team up to compete, and now he wants input on the roster? Fire him tonight and automatically get better.

Jesus...get anyone. I'd like to get Delonte, but the PG position is overstacked and I don't think Morris or Blake are tradeable. KMart should be the next best option; we need a big so bad.

I don't know how Pau wasn't traded earlier..Jim Buss or Mitch are way to prideful.

There's no way the Lakers are making the playoffs this season. They should have tried to get K Love and Rondo and rebuild for next season.

Not even Phil Jackson can fix this team's current lack of quality bigs.
