Teams are interested in Gasol because not only is he a player that can help now, but he's going to be a $19 million expiring contract next season. That's absolutely insane. I'll put it this way, when we traded for Gasol back in 2007, one of the biggest reasons was for the Grizzlies to shed salary and Kwame's $8 million expiring contract was of high value and considered a "big expiring contract". Now the CBA has changed drastically.
The luxury tax implications are big for teams now more so than ever before, it really is a huge deal that is underestimated by fans. The whole "expiring contract means little" comment has no merit. It's pretty rare where you see a player of Gasol's caliber and contract size traded off before his deal runs out.
As for this "deal", I've been saying that I wouldn't be shocked if the Lakers go out and acquire Gay, it's exactly the type of deal that would improve this team now and for the future. It gives the Lakers options and now gives us a player that can guard the better athletic wings in the league and allows Metta to guard PF's down low where he is most effective now at this point of his career. Plus the athleticism is obviously something that Gay brings and something this team needs if we are going to continue to play this more high tempo system and get out on the break.
For the Grizzlies, they get rid of Gay's contract and take back Pierce, who will also be a expiring next season, so for their team they get a veteran guy like Pierce for a couple seasons to make a run in the playoffs, then get $15 million off the books.
For the Celtics, it makes sense to acquire Gasol for a couple seasons and use his services while Fab Melo and Jared Sullinger develop. What's interesting is that Gasol comes off the books next year and you could see Garnett traded sometime during next season, they gave him a really bad three year deal, so they could shed salary and be a major player in the 2014 off-season and have a promising core of players that could entice a free agent.
We'll see what happens. It's pretty rare for something reported/rumored to come to fruition involving the Lakers. I'd be in favor of it though.

How reliable is he?
Apparently Marc Stein from ESPN said it on air. Read that on another board.
If Lakers somehow manage to do this, I hope we also ask for Barbosa, we need another scoring punch off the bench
