We'll never catch Memphis and the playoffs is still a long-shot. The Lakers just need to play as if every game of the season might be the last, which is almost is.
Lakers making the playoffs isn't a "long shot".
2.5 gms out can be very easily obtained.
Like I said, we just have to continue winning games and other things will fall into place.
Catching Memphis is a long shot because they are a good team so I don't expect them to lose many games in a row for us to catch them if it gets to that point.
But the teams in front of us... Portland/Houston/Minnesota/Utah.... None of those teams are better than the Lakers and each of those teams are capable of going on very long losing streaks like Houston has. It comes down to winning games, we need to control what we have the power to control.

Best case scenario is the 5th seed. But that's a real best case scenario where teams have to start losing a lot

. It comes down to winning games, we need to control what we have the power to control.
It all comes to this. Taking in it game at a time as howard and bryant mentioned, no looking at the standings nor the schedule, focus on your next game.
I'm actually worried about the game tonight. If we could manage to have kobe and dwight working efficiently on both ends while having the team hitting the open threes on offense and playing solid on defense + containing James should give us the win.
Get James uncomfortable from the beginning, make him shoot all day.. He and wade are effective in driving more than Jumpers, Howard here will play a crucial part, not like he never does, but Heat relies a lot on getting to the rim.
The good thing about Heat unlike OkC , they are forward runners .. even if LeBron plays as a point guard or point forward shall i say, There is no westbrook who can live by PnR and a Mid-range Jump shot ..
Hope we steal a win ..

Still indeed looks like a needed miracle though.

This upcoming stretch of games is key. It's one that can either put us closer or in a playoff spot. But it could also be one that puts us further back.
Gotta win the gimme games to finish January, Toronto/Utah/Phoenix/New Orleans and gotta win one of the matchups with Chicago, Memphis, or OKC.
I'd prefer we win all of them but not sure that will happen lol.

Tonight's games of teams in our horizons:
HOU @ IND
GSW @ SAS (More of a stretch really but thought I'd throw it in here)
WAS @ DEN
OKC @ DAL
(Red teams are the ones we want to lose tonight)
