Sorry, but I just don't see it (LeBron signing here).

Nor do I necessarily want him here. It just feels wrong.

Absolutely not. But there's an argument to be made that LeBron's game (which is quite soporific), will not age well. Similar argument could be made against Dwight.

Can't quote. On my phone

From espn

The Los Angeles Lakers, whose plan to re-sign center Dwight Howard did not pan out this offseason, are poised to rebuild fast by focusing on the two biggest free agents of 2014 -- LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, front office sources have told ESPN.

Nathaniel S. Butler/Getty Images
The Lakers would be able to immediately rebuild by adding LeBron James, left, and Carmelo Anthony in the same free-agent haul in 2014.
Opinions are split on whether the Lakers can actually land James or Anthony, with one source calling it "realistic" and another saying it was "far-fetched at this point." Nonetheless, the Lakers have made it clear they are positioning themselves for a run at one and perhaps even two of the superstars who could become free agents in 2014, by refusing to commit to any contract past this next season, multiple sources have said.

That's nonsense to be honest, nothing about Lebron's says he can't still be a dominant player for the next 3-4 years in the NBA.  He's essentially a more athletic Magic Johnson.  Magic was still an elite player when he retired at 31.  Lebron will be 29 this year, if the Lakers could get 3 years of elite play out of a 4 year contract why not?

Absolutely not. But there's an argument to be made that LeBron's game (which is quite soporific), will not age well. Similar argument could be made against Dwight.

No way should we ever compare Lebron's and Dwight's skills and games.  Lebron can dominate in almost every area of bball...

Some things to keep in mind

https://twitter.com/brosales12

Ironic thing in 2014 is that Melo's max is significantly higher than Bron's max. $2 million difference. What you get for taking a discount.

Bron can make $21,735,000 from another team. Melo up to $23,527,847 (!). Sure as hell hope we don't pay Melo that much.

Will depend on LA's draft position, but ironically, if they get Wiggins, technically don't have enough to offer both LBJ/Melo their max.

Lakers have to walk a very fine line if they want to be players in 2015 and sign someone big in 2014. Not as easy as it seems.

If Young opts in, Lakers get Wiggins, sign Melo to the max, $17,418,059 left in cap space. Bit deceiving though.

You have to guarantee $18-19M in space opens up in 2015. That means that much expiring contracts or space above the salary floor.

Nash has a $9,701,000 expiring, so you have to ensure at least $7,717,059 more in one-year salary commitments in 2015.

So you technically only have about $10 million to re-sign both Kobe and Pau. That will be fun

Of course, a lower draft pick and Melo taking a bit less could offer a bit more flexibility. Still hard to pay Kobe eight figures though.

For those asking, you can't just re-sign Kobe and Pau w/Bird rights. They carry a cap hold that erases your space until you renounce them.

So if Kobe wants to give the team a big discount, that would be peachy, especially if re-signing Pau is at stake.

Very difficult to pursue any B-level guys in 2014 though and still maintain 2015 flexibility. Too much space needed.

Ironically, Nash being on the books in 2014 helps the Lakers pursue guys in 2015. Expiring that is ensured to go off the books.

I would never pay Melo more than LeBron.

Nash would have to be moved.

Kobe would have to take around 12-13 Mill, so we could get Melo & LeBron right? And Nash would have to be moved to another team this year or retire.

Here is how the Lakers cap could work in 2014 and why it would be so appealing to Lebron and Melo:

Estimated Cap: $62m

Guaranteed Salaries: $11.8m (with Nick Young player option exercised)

Cap Space: $50.2m

If Nash is stretched Cap Space: ~$56.6m

With all that cap space...http://www.latimes.c...0,3758038.story

If Kobe were to take a min contract next season, and then a max in 2015, he would only hit the 2014 cap for around $1.45m.

If Nash is stretched and Kobe signs for min Cap Space: ~$55m

Lakers could sign Lebron and Melo for roughly $20m each. They could also re-sign Pau for a sweetheart deal AND still have cap space to sign someone like KLove, Rondo, etc. in 2015.

It all depends on Kobe's willingness to play ball and the Lakers ability to lay this out for someone like Lebron.

If I am Lebron though...do I really turn away the chance to play with a good friend (Melo) who is in his prime and to team with Kobe for a drive for more rings?

PLUS, lets not forget what the Lakers are doing this offseason with their depth.  They have signed Kaman, Young and Johnson to 1/2 year deals which means they now have their rights and cap holds for a tiny amount.  They can resign them for longer/bigger contracts AFTER they sign their superstars.  Theoretically the Lakers could have this as their roster in 2014:

Kyle Lowry / Jordan Farmar

Kobe Bryant / Nick Young

Carmelo Anthony / Wesley Johnson

Lebron James / Jordan Hill / Ryan Kelly

Pau Gasol / Chris Kaman / Robert Sacre

So what are the realistic salaries of these new acquisitions? Somewhere around the following numbers:

Melo $20m

Lebron $21m

Kobe $1.5m (really would be $10.5m avg because of his $19.5m contract in 2015)

Pau $7.5m

Kyle Lowry $7m

Granted, this is all contingent on Phil Jackson being a big part of the organization going forward.  I don't think there is anyway Lakers can lure Lebron away from Pat Riley if Phil was not part of puzzle.

Here's how the dominos would have to fall IMO: Kobe accepts pay cut, Kobe recruits Melo, Melo recruits LeBron, LeBron recruits vet min guys

It makes sense that this "story" broke the day after the MLB All-Star game, which is annually the slowest news day for sports.

There is nothing here yet.  But, just like in 2010, the media will try to keep us tantalized with rumors from "multiple sources" from now until July.

Anything to distract Lakers fans from what has the potential to be a horrendous season.

Lebron stinks..

Sign Carmelo since his wife is nicer to look at...

Pick up a serviceable center in 2 years. The eyebrow kid in NO would work.

While I was driving back from school today, one of the sports radio station here in San Diego brought up a possible scenario. First, Kobe Bryant has the biggest net worth in the NBA. So him taking a major pay-cut may be possible. Secondly, not only do these guys want to win rings, but they want to make history. We all know Kobe and LeBron are going to go down as top 10 players who have ever played the game. Someone though brought up a good point. These players may be planning to be the greatest regular-season team ever, exceeding the 95-96 Bulls. So them coming together will give them an opportunity to do something special/ When you have LeBron, Bryant, Anthony, on your team, you are going to attract other players who will take less. Mavericks are struggling to reload, and Dirk is not getting any happier. Who knows what can happen in this league?

^ In a perfect world, if every athlete TRULY wanted to win first & foremost more than anything, it would happen, but we all know that's just not the case. Money means a lot more than winning more times than not. Not nearly enough guys willing to sacrifice themselves and be humble enough to do such all for winning.

You can't completely criticize them either though. I mean if these guys were to just take a few million, that's just not enough to be able to live on and support your family & loved ones.
