I think what I like most about the case for Jabbar is that he transcended two eras. He won an MVP at the beginning of the Bird Magic era, then was still a key component in 4 more championship teams.
Some players happen to come along at just the right time. Timing was super critical for Jordan. I don't think timing was as critical to Jabbar being listed at or near the top the mountain. if anything, timing worked against him.
Timing hurts Kobe. He is the face of the prima Dona high school to NBA era. People decided the day he joined the league that he was not allowed to be Jordan, even after years and years of people constantly calling the best player of the era the greatest of all time.
Timing has been great for Lebron. He came into the league right as Kobe hatred was at an all time high (2003 - Colorado). People so desperately wanted someone to be better than Kobe, in part so they could prove that Kobe was not as good as Jordan.
