The name isn't terrible, it can be shortened to Pels and drawn in script on hats and other team paraphernalia, besides, there are dumber names in pro sports, such as Lakers, or Knickerbockers, if those teams weren't n LA and NY, those names would be seen as dumb. The name is equal to Bucks, or Spurs, not terrible, not great, but sensible. Anything can be made cool through proper marketing

Ignorant name, but to be honest, the quote above (from the Hornets fan, whoever it was) makes sense when talking about the Lakers. I don't know how many times I've had someone talk trash on our team...and somewhere in between it all, bring up the fact that they have no idea what a Laker is, and that it doesn't sound intimidating at all.

Truthfully, if a new franchise landed that name, and there was no history behind it (as it carries with it the greatest franchise in all of sports, IMO), then it's quite laughable.

I remember how many people laughed at the Thunder. I always thought it was a good name, but most didn't. Now, I don't see anyone making fun of it.

How many people trash the name out in San Antonio? Spurs? Really?

Lots of talk saying Charlotte will go back to being the Hornets. Really is logical.

But anyways, apparently Uni Watch ran a rebranding the Hornets contest a few months ago and one of the finalists came up with the New Orleans Pelicans and designed uniforms for the contest, check it out:

I don't like the name, but there is history and a reason behind it. It's not just a haphazard naming. There already was a New Orleans Pelicans baseball team in the 1800s and the pelican is known for being fiercely territorial and loyal as well.

Also, some of those logos submitted were ripped off from the old baseball team.

So they're officially going to be the New Orleans Pelicans next year, the change was approved by the league office. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, New Orleans Pelicans...ugh, that's rough.

Theres some pretty cool looking logos in circulation actually. I posted them below this pic of a Pelican. Just another bird. I mean whats so fearsome about a Cardinal or a penguin and those are sports teams that sell major merch. Actually wtf is so scray about a Lakers? or a Spur. What about a Cav.....or a Wizard...lol. Just playing devils advocate. Not in support or against.
