Good. If the Cavs show interest, maybe the Suns will reconsider the idea of not giving up a good draft pick.

Trade talks between the Suns and the Lakers start up again as other teams start to show interest in Gasol
Lakers have a Plan B, and Plan B is NOT keeping Gasol as Anderson Varajao is in their sights

pau-gasol.jpg?w=640

Pau Gasol is approaching his return following a groin injury that will likely keep him off the court for one more week. The Los Angeles Lakers are getting desperate for the center to return not only to help win games, but also to hopefully execute a trade before the approaching deadline. The Phoenix Suns have started negotiations once again as the Cleveland Cavaliers look to get in on the action as well.

According to Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News, the Suns have once again started negotiations for Gasol after backing off following his recent injury setback. It was confirmed that the Phoenix Suns were the frontrunners in negotiations for Gasol, but backed off with the intentions of waiting to see just how the veteran recovered from his groin injury. Trade talks were essentially shelved after Gasol was ruled out for two weeks, but have started up again as other teams start to show interest.

The issue is the Suns were considering moving a 2015 draft pick to the Lakers while Los Angeles wants a 2014 pick. According to Lawrence, the two sides will continue to discuss option.

With trade talks stalling, the Lakers are looking at Plan B for Gasol that does not include keeping him.

Lange Greene from Basketball Insiders is reporting the Cleveland Cavaliers could begin negotiations for Gasol. The team is weighing options of shipping off Anderson Varejao before the deadline and could work him in with a deal for Gasol.

Varejao is one of Cleveland's better assets. The veteran certain is on the books for just $9 million this season and is only owed $4 million in guaranteed cash for next year.

I hope this isn't just reporters trying to make themselves interesting.

C'mon Mitch, dont dissappoint us ... again.

Makes me wonder what this new GM of the Cavs could be thinking.  If the Lakers got Varajao that means we'd have him on the books next year for only 4 million and that's not bad..

Particularly if we got a pick from the Cavs.  Don't see why they'd give up theirs though for Gasol unless they think they can make a run with him.

I ultimately think if we're sending Pau to anywhere for a draft pick it'll be Phoenix.

Yeah. Or Charlotte.

I'm not exactly sure what Varejao would accomplish, although he is a very good frontcourt defender. Or used to be.

What it'd do (if we got Varejao) would take initiative off having to sign that kind of player in the upcoming draft if Anderson was going to fill that void.

So it'd be pretty much to fill a void we wouldn't have to draft or look at drafting.

That's true. Varejao is actually a pretty solid player, although he's a bit injury prone. He'd be a pretty good fit next to someone like Embiid or Julius Randle.

One of Cavs/Magic 2014 2nd round pick + Varejao <-> Pau

In another thread I was pondering about who to get for PF/C position for exactly that price tag, Varejao would be perfect.

PG Nash / Marshall

SG Kobe / Blake / Henry

SF Deng / Young / 2nd round pick

PF Vonleh / Johnson / Kelly

C Varejao / Sacre

This would be a title team.

A title team? Not really, IMO. Maybe if you add Lowry and remove Nash, that would be a WCF at best.

Not quite a contender, but i'd expect us to do better than Vonleh in the draft and i'd expect us to do better in free agency as well. But i like the general build of that team.

Not even close to a title team. ESPECIALLY with MDA at the helm.

If you replace Nash by Rondo and Sacre by Love I agree. Lol

PG: Nash cannot produce anymore. It's difficult for him to finish out a game, let alone an entire season. Unless we get Lowry, Marshall should be starting. He's shown high efficiency in facilitating and even playing off the ball. If Farmar can only stay healthy, he should be backing up Marshall. He'd provide athleticism, offense, and facilitating off the bench. Blake is getting old and is too injury prone at this point of his career.

SG: Obviously Kobe will be starting. Young would be be the preferred option to come off the bench and limit Kobe's minutes. He can create his own shot and provide an offensive sparkplug off the bench. His chemistry with Farmar would help bolster the bench.

SF: I really hope we can get Deng without overpaying. He's a two-way player and has playoff experience. Wes backing him up would provide another lengthy defender.

PF: I'm looking into 2015 in this one. Kevin Love. With Hill backing him up, you'd have another hustler/rebounder.

C: If there is any way we can get Larry Sanders, I'd do it. With Love at the 4, you'll want a rim protector at the 5.

***Who we draft will determine who we will pursue in FA. If we somehow land Wiggins, we're less likely to sign Deng. If we get Embiid, we're more likely to sign Deng.

A 2015-2016 starting lineup could potentially look like this:

PG: Marshall / Farmar

SG: Kobe / Young

SF: Deng / Johnson

PF: Love / Hill

C: Embiid / Sacre

This is hoping many of our young guys don't demand expensive contracts. Also, I have not taken the Pau trade into consideration.

Just wondering would you guys consider Kenneth Faried? Don't watch him much but whenever he used to play us he dogged. Not implying Gasol is worth Faried.
