Asik and Lin for Gasol right now is a good deal for the Lakers.
They're getting high salary next season, but it wont could against the cap. Gasol's been on Houston's radar for a long time and while he isn't the defender that Dwight is, he's insurance at the 5 as well as someone who can play next to Dwight. They'd be able to re-sign him for a reasonable deal as well.
For the Lakers, we solidify our frontcourt with Asik and our PG position with Lin, which would allow us to move some of our "redundant" players - especially some those we perhaps wont be able to re-sign in the summer.
Does it make us contenders? Not really, but it does gives us a puncher's chance. It also makes it possible to keep many of our current guys and it gives us real tradeable assets.
That being said, Bleacher report isn't exactly the most trustworthy source...
