Asik and Lin for Gasol right now is a good deal for the Lakers.

They're getting high salary next season, but it wont could against the cap. Gasol's been on Houston's radar for a long time and while he isn't the defender that Dwight is, he's insurance at the 5 as well as someone who can play next to Dwight. They'd be able to re-sign him for a reasonable deal as well.

For the Lakers, we solidify our frontcourt with Asik and our PG position with Lin, which would allow us to move some of our "redundant" players - especially some those we perhaps wont be able to re-sign in the summer.

Does it make us contenders? Not really, but it does gives us a puncher's chance. It also makes it possible to keep many of our current guys and it gives us real tradeable assets.

That being said, Bleacher report isn't exactly the most trustworthy source...

Yes to asik no to Lin. Either or. They are getting paid fat next season so no

If the Lakers aren't going to make a run at Melo this off-season, it makes sense to pick up both then let them expire as they prepare to go after Kevin Love.

As the year goes on and more superstars re-up with their teams, it makes less and less sense to hold on to cap flexibility for the summer.  I agree that landing players who expire next season is a forward thinking move.  Am I a fan of Asik/Lin for Pau/Filler?  Don't really have an opinion either way.  They would help and we'd be getting rid of Pau but is it the best move we can make?  Maybe, maybe not.

If it happens, cool.

If not, no biggie.

We'll even be able to keep Asik while going after Kevin Love.

Lin as well, he gets underrated b/c he hasn't duplicated Linsanity but he's avg like 14/4 on 50% shooting mostly off the bench.  Would be a nice asset to have on deck.

We'll even be able to keep Asik while going after Kevin Love.

Dont stars get traded EVERY season.

The Lakers won't take any bad contracts.

How many stars get traded w/o bad contracts?  And no stars don't get traded every season.  If you want a star you either have to have a valuable player going back, room for a bad contract and draft picks.  Right now the Lakers only have room to take on bad deals.

I think this trade deadline will possibly answer a lot about our future plans. If Gasol isn't moved than its obvious we are going all in on Melo. If he is moved then its most likely for expiring/s that we will resign or 2014-15 rentals that help us short term as well as free up cap for a run at Love, Rondo etc.

Well let's see.  Pekovic got highs against Pau but we won and Pau had a nice game so no one really said anything.  Plumlee destroyed him tonight but it's more obvious when Gasol has a bad game.

If Gasol's opponent has 35/15 and Gasol has 28/12 then you don't get many complaints but if Gasol's opponent has 35/15 and Gasol has 13/4 then it's easier to blame.

But his defense is still horrid unfortunately.
