Not sure if this was posted in this thread but I read this a few days ago:

According to Ohio.com, Cavs general manager Chris Grant recently called the Lakers to try and snap their 7-foot Spaniard:

Grant has checked on the availability of LaMarcus Aldridge and Marc Gasol. He has explored taking Pau Gasol off the Lakers’ hands. And after Kevin Love blasted the Minnesota Timberwolves organization in a recent Yahoo Sports story, Grant checked in to see if they had any interest in moving Love in a package built around Varejao. The answer was no.

Of course, it seems the Lakers weren’t interested. It’s unclear whether the package would’ve been built around Anderson Varejao, or if discussions even got that far.

You can add this one to other recent rumors – apparently the Lakers turned down offers of Andrea Bargnani and Jose Calderon from the Raptors, and Derrick Williams and Nikola Pekovic from the Timberwolves.

Right now, it seems Pau is safe, but who knows if that could change in the future as we near the February trade deadline. This is just another one of those rumors to keep your eye on.

I do find this interesting because I think Varejao would be involved but more than that, now Cleveland is a potential trade partner that could bring us back a good piece or two if its a 3-team trade.

Typical Lakers fan response

But like I was saying, teams would be far more interested in Varejao than Gasol at this point. A team like Utah or Atlanta would give up their main pieces (Milsap and Smith) if they get a productive player like Varejao back. If the Lakers were to ask anything of Cleveland, I would at least want Miles back.

What would Varejao do aside from clog the lane with Dwight and offer even less spacing than Gasol offers?

He does a lot of things that Gasol won't/can't do: rebound, defend, hustle

This is not the Gasol of old so people need to stop acting like we can pull off grand theft.

Rebound at a high rate.
Run the floor well.
Bring a starting level energy player to the frontcourt.
Hit the midrange J with consistency.
Attack the rim off the bounce.
Set REAL picks and roll to the RIM instead of floating around the ft line.

Varejao fits well with this team...getting him for Pau would help this team on both ends of the floor...would it be a fair trade? Debatable...

So basically Varejao would do what Jordan Hill does. What would he do at the power forward position?

It's easy to see what Varejao can do at the center position but what would he do with Dwight dominating down there and he's relagated to the mid range solely?

How does he fix our spacing issues, how does he not clod the lane when Howard is in there, if he has to play a mid range game solely how does he stretch the floor.

Those are the kinds of questions we need to ask.

What I'm asking is what does he give us that a lineup of Howard/Hill already don't that would make a significant difference? That's what I'm asking I guess :)

As I remember, along side Irving tearing the Lakers a new one in their arena, Varejao came to help an in a big way, too.

Well like I said above, Varejao has a better chance of bringing us someone really good than Gasol can. I think Atlanta wouldn't mind giving up Josh Smith if they are getting Varejao back

im not being serious just asking my friend goes but doesnt talk about it. Anyway AV for pau is not a good deal. Our only trade piece is pau we have to be very careful hpw hes dealt because after pau is dealt thats it that is going to be our team. I know we are not geting a superstar or even an all star for pau but we need to be very carefull who we get because kobes contract is not going anywere and the only way dwight leaves la is by his own will mitch is not trading him unless it is a trade out of this world. Nash is here to stay aswell after that we have noone to trade.

P&R...he's a much better P&R player because he's aggressive, decisive and he hustles for loose balls.

And he'll do what Jordan Hill does? That's a good thing...and something we need in the starting lineup.

Yeah but the thing with Hill is that he works with Gasol because Gasol isn't looking to post up anyway. Jordan Hill works in spurts but not for extended minutes cause if he stays in too long long it screws with our spacing. Which is why he doesn't start.

Varejao on this team would basically screw spacing on both our bench and starting lineups because of the fact he dominates where Howard roams and would hit the mid range about as often as Hill and would be relegated there for a majority of the time.
